Yes, you need to send a thank-you note after a job interview.
This might be unwelcome news, especially if you sided against the somewhat old-fashioned practice at the center of the recent, highly contentious online debate surrounding an article by Business Insider executive managing editor Jessica Liebman. In a post for Business Insider, Liebman wrote that when she first started hiring, she came up with "a simple rule: We shouldn't move a candidate to the next stage in the interview process unless they send a thank-you email."
Plenty of people disagreed with Liebman, but her stance gets at the very heart of why it is always better as a job seeker to err on the side of caution and send a thank-you note: You never know what the hiring manager may consider a deal-breaker.
While not all hiring managers take thank-you notes as seriously as Liebman, 80% find such messages helpful when reviewing candidates, according to a survey by Accountemps.

Every job I ever had I was hired during the interview, but it has been over 35 years since I became self employed.
For that matter, nothing beats a hard copy sent via USPS.
Call me superstitious, but my habit has always been to sleep with heavy stock executive stationery so that the thank you note will be infused with my scent. These things get passed around the HR office and sooner or later work their magic.
Sadly, few companies notify a candidate that they were not selected. Candidates wait and wait but are rarely notified.
Does a thank-you email count?

HR professionals have gone the way of journalists, there aren't any good ones left. Frankly, the interview process 99% of companies use is flawed. Amazing given all the HR societies out there.

Never sent a thank-you note, and never received or even expected one from any of the hundred of people I’ve interviewed. While I don’t think there’s anything particularly wrong with sending a note, I also don’t see the point. When I go for an interview, the person/company interviewing me isn’t doing me a favor. They’re simply trying to fill an open position within theiir organization, just as I’m trying to secure employment for mysef. I no more owe them a note than they owe one to me for coming in for the interview. A mutual verbal “thank you” at the end of the chat is more than adequate.
Tons from those liberal HR types about what a candidate needs to do, yet these HR bimbos don’t follow their own advice.
I wouldn’t want a job where a thank you letter was what got me selected. That just says the manager is mentally feeble and easily swayed.
Yes, but an actual physical thank you note or card has more impact, in my opinion.
At ALL our interviews, anyone who even sends a thank you note to us, we respond. Even to those who wont get the job, we always thank them for coming in.
Polished shoes, bring a well-done resume on nice paper, ironed or dry-cleaned outfit, speak up like a boss … you’ve just beat 99% of Millennials...
It's just good manners, which are few and far between nowadays.
If the person you interviewed with is stuck between which of two candidates to hire, sending a thank you note might just break the tie in your favor.
I could never figure out what to say. No matter how genuine I tried to write, even just “thank you for the interview!”, it sounded hollow.
