“truth should triumph over nationalistic narratives.”

So when will Newsweak start telling the truth about the kung flu? the kung flu virus? ivermectin?

The real culprit is disease. My understanding is that most "Native Americans" died before ever seeing a "white man" as the diseases travelled faster than the colonists.

You are almost certainly correct. However, the number killed by disease was probably less than many make it out to be. The pilgrims were 125 years after Columbus introduced Asiatic and European diseases into the new world.

If the diseases spread with any efficacy, populations would have developed immunity and recovered in a couple of generations.

What we see is diseases causing large losses for 300 years, as more and more populations were exposed.

Eskimos on the North West coast of Alaska had large losses from disease into the 1900s.

For that matter, Americans and Europeans lost millions to the flu in 1918.

What about the Anasazi, who predated the “native Americans” before they came over from Asia?

...The real culprit is disease

Old World diseases wiped out 90% of the New World people. The interesting question is why New World diseases did not do likewise to the Old World.

Actually, the first Thanksgiving was here in St Augustine, FL (where I live) on Sept 8, 1565, when our founder had mass celebrated at the landing site. Eucharist means Thanksgiving or thanks offering. After this the Indians and Spaniards had a dinner that probably puzzled both of them...New World and Old World vegetables and meats getting together for the first time.

Old World diseases wiped out 90% of the New World people.

I suspect the 90% figure is high.

It is probably less than 50%. Even the black death was only credited with 40%.

Remember, Indian tribes were almost constantly at war with one another. Lots of tribes were wiped out by other tribes.

As mention previously, tribes were getting sick for at least 400 years.

Don't forget many Europeans died of sickness over the same period.

The reason fewer people of European descent died, is their ancestors had developed immunity through massive death tolls hundreds of year previously.

Spain sent a royal expedition in the early 19th century to distribute the rudimentary smallpox vaccine to everyone in the Spanish colonies, even as far as the Philippines. The US, on the other hand, was giving plague blankets to the Indians.

Diseases from contact were evenly shared. Syphilis is thought to have been introduced into Europe from the Caribbean or from Africa via the Caribbean, and yellow fever is thought have been brought to the Americas by infected mosquito larvae in the bilge water of the ships bringing slaves from West Africa.

Thanksgiving has never been a celebratory holiday in my family. Whenever my family did cook we always gave thanks that all the Native Americans weren’t wiped out when Columbus “discovered” America. I never understood why my family was so against Thanksgiving. In school we drew turkeys with our hands and it was a happy time. It meant a couple of days off from school. My teachers made it seem like Thanksgiving was a holiday to look forward to. The New York City public education system told me what Thanksgiving was all about. I was very careful to regurgitate what they taught me when tested so I wouldn’t get a failing grade. When I was older though I was told the truth by my family.
My great, great, great, great grandfather was a part of a band of Black Indians in Florida, hence my unique and Native American-sounding last name. It seems I come from a lonng line of warriors and activists. I am a revolutionary not by choice but by lineage. When I did finally learn, there was no stopping me. Whenever someone asked what I was doing for Thanksgiving I proudly stated that I no longer celebrate it. Thanksgiving day should be known as National Land Theft and American Genocide Day.

I history can be rewritten and if told enough times eventually becomes the truth!
People always tell me to forget the past. I should just let it go and move on. Why do people of color always have to forget?! Would you tell a Jewish person to forget about the holocaust and just move on?! Would you tell the family of those who lost their lives on 9/11 to just forget about it?! So why are our tragedies forgettable and others are not?! I WILL NEVER forget! I will ALWAYS honor those who lost their lives unjustifiable.
So when you sit down to dinner this year, look at your family, serve the food and tell each other what you are most thankful for, think about the origins of Thanksgiving. Think about the countless Native Americans who lost their lives so you can carve a turkey and get the best deals on Black Friday. Say a prayer for them, especially the children, who died simply because of the color of their skin.

...their ancestors had developed immunity ...

How does one develop immunity to a disease their body has not experienced yet? The best answer I've come across for why plague did not get back to Europe is domesticated animals. There were no domesticated animals to ship back to Europe that acted as disease carriers.

The Wampanoag made a mutual defense pact with the Pilgrims.

New England's Tribes were savages. Read up on the first war in New England, King Phillip War. It is unknown in American history.

A disgraceful article; but big surprise in the comments — just about everyone thought so, too. That’s unusual for Newsweak readers. When even the libs are fed up, that’s saying something.

Spain sent a royal expedition in the early 19th century to distribute the rudimentary smallpox vaccine to everyone in the Spanish colonies, even as far as the Philippines. The US, on the other hand, was giving plague blankets to the Indians.

Another completely biased account. It highlights the one documented instance where infected blankets might have been deliberately given to Indians, in the middle of a war. It is not clear it ever actually was done. This was in 1763, before the USA existed. If it were actually done, it was done by a private citizen, not the British government.

There was a good reason such biological warfare was avoided. It was recognized such warfare could easily boomerang and work against the people who attempted it.

Meanwhile, Thomas Jefferson was one of the early adopters of smallpox inoculation, and sent the vaccine with the Lewis and Clark expedition, so they could inoculate Indians along the way.
