"Threnody" encompasses all genres. There are great threnodies in prose (such as the lines from Charles Dickens' _Bleak House_ upon the death of Little Jo: "Dead, your Majesty. Dead, my lords and gentlemen. Dead..."), in poetry (as in W.H. Auden's "Funeral Blues": "The stars are not wanted now: put out every one, / Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun..."), and in music (Giovanni Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater," for one). "Threnody," which we borrowed from the Greek word "threnoidia" (from "threnos," the word for "dirge"), has survived in English since the early 1600s. "Melody" and "tragedy" are related to "threnody" through the Greek root that forms their ending -- "aeidein," which means "to sing." By the same token, "comedy" is related as well.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

I hate to disagree, but thats a tough one to get into school age children.
We have discussed it, and he knows the catholic teaching on this, but again, he is hardheaded...but growing. Lord, you made us this way...watch over all teens who are like this.
Sadly no, I was getting around to that. The Longer it takes one to get to the realisation of yours I posted above, it takes even longer to fix the problems that stemmed from it.
You are right...they are not fully able to deal with the concept, although somewhere between 15 and 25 it usually begins to click. But we lead them in that direction. "You choose well, you succeed. You choose poorly, you lose, and the consequences may go much further than you mean" are lessons that require repetition and experience to really master.
well you don't get it into them on a grand scale, you point out in every day situations where some action or misbehavior on their part led to some consequence that they are not happy about. eventually when they are grown, they can then make the connection on their own, if you continually point out that, gee, too bad you can't do such and such that you really wanted to, bc of X which you decided to do. i always tell mine they can CHOOSE to do right or they can choose to do wrong and they will have to bear the consquences, regardless of what it is. they have to be taught that the choice is affirmatively their's regardless of what sad/bad/traumatic things that happen to them.
knowing the catholic teaching is one thing, and not a bad thing. but having the pragmatics of the consequences of that behavior is another tact that might make more of an impression. I bought a book at CPAC a few years back written by a female pediatrician on the consequences of sexual behavior in teen, i will look for the name of it for you wheni get home.

the failing was your parent's, not your's. you weren't taught that that there are consequences til you figured it out on your own and then you had to come back from that.

But Josh's grades are so bad this year, that he might not be good enough scholastically to get in.
This is not an outrageous idea in our family. Their grandfather was career Army...KACHubby feels more at home on an army base than anywhere else.
But if Teen doesn't get his act together, he won't make the cut.
I understand that. However, it took quite a bit of time, even as an adult to stop being pissed off about it, and right the ship....

The Army worked for our nephew. Although he married prematurely.
Yep...most days it's better, and I like my son...then he does something like last night...and he hasn't quite come to understand reciprocal actions yet...like, if Mama is tired and crabby, maybe you should volunteer to help.
But it certainly wasn't worth bruising my hands over. I can see why my grandmother (who gave me the drama queen genetic streak, and raised four boys who often drove her crazy and broke her heart from time to time) broke dishes instead of hitting things.
I just finished doing tests for a physical yesterday. Glad it was complete before all this happened. I would have hated to take my blood pressure last night!
It would be good for him, I think...but we will see. Back in the old days, my dad got in trouble and had a choice of joining the military or getting into more trouble. He lied about his age and went into the Navy.
