Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - threnody
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 05/25/2005 | The Janitor

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

threnody \THREN-uh-dee\ noun

a song of lamentation for the dead; elegy

Example sentence:
In the opera's final scene, the leading lady sings a threnody to mourn the murdered king.

Did you know?
"Threnody" encompasses all genres. There are great threnodies in prose (such as the lines from Charles Dickens' _Bleak House_ upon the death of Little Jo: "Dead, your Majesty. Dead, my lords and gentlemen. Dead..."), in poetry (as in W.H. Auden's "Funeral Blues": "The stars are not wanted now: put out every one, / Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun..."), and in music (Giovanni Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater," for one). "Threnody," which we borrowed from the Greek word "threnoidia" (from "threnos," the word for "dirge"), has survived in English since the early 1600s. "Melody" and "tragedy" are related to "threnody" through the Greek root that forms their ending -- "aeidein," which means "to sing." By the same token, "comedy" is related as well.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Yep, I didn't get to sleep until after 1...slept light and had bad dreams.

I need to go work in my garden. But I banged up my hands pretty good. Bruised the palm of my right hand and the thumb of my left. Don't know how well I am goind to handle a hoe.

Irish temper...blows up sometimes until I can't talk...and basically, the only person who sets me off is the teenager...

What's the deal with the Clintons being rude to restaurant people? Yeah, I know, I know.

It's really strange, I love ginger, but can't stomach ginger ale.

I found some lemonade mix in the pantry and so made some of that - at least it's a break from the tea.

I haven't tried the diet mountain dew mainly becuase I rarely drink diet soda, or mountain dew.

Ouch - your hands sound painful..

I understand the Irish temper, I've got one also :)

The only thing that would make me feel worse right now was if the weather was conducive to working in the garden - thankfully it's not (I can't believe I just said that)

I don't know what the charges are, yet - but Fox news just said the runaway bride has been indicted.

Geeze! That makes TWO, then. This is officially HUGH.

Three, counting yours "Truthly."

There is one very conservative assemblyman in the state, Michael Patrick Carroll. I was so impressed by his small-government, pro-growth philosophy, that I had my daughter, (Truth'sBabyGirl) call him up and offer her services as an intern (don't even go there!) while she was still in high school. This was during the height of the Lewinsky scandal, and Michael originally thought that he was being set-up. Eventually, he hired her and they have corresponded ever since.

Cool! (It was a nice day outside. Opened up the windows in the sun room, had the grandedkids over for supper on Monday and Tuesday: beany weinies and peas one day, spaghetti ("spchigetti and noodles and meatballs and noodles" as he describes it) and green beans the next.)

(Robt nods head in understanding.)

But, it may turn out that his kids are a joy and wonder to be with.

Amazing how much a person grows up between 16 and rebellious and single and hating school, and 24 and married with kids and a house and a car repair shop to run. (Sometimes grows up, he cautions.)

Growing up Jewish in The Bronx, where FDR was revered and JFK sanctified, it's amazing that I saw the light. Four years in the Air Force gave me some perspective. Fifteen years on Wall Street didn't hurt either.

caught my teen smoking on the back porch last night and I could have strangled him.

Maybe you should have knitted a condom instead of a conundrum. :) Of course, the stitches would have had to be very, very tight.

we all get here via different roads, truthy. i was raised blue collar union democrat. xshub got a job on the Hill working for the Judiciary committee and voila, he saw the light and then shone it on me. Xshub thinks it is invaluable to have turned from the dark side, rather than being born on the right, because you can understand so much better the way the Left's mind works. the better to combat it.
