Word For The Day, Thursday, June 2, 2005
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
shibboleth \SHIB-uh-lith; -leth\, noun
1. A word or pronunciation that distinguishes a particular class or set of persons from another.
2. A word or saying identified with a group or cause; a slogan; a catchword.
3. A saying or belief identified with a particular group and usually regarded by outsiders as meaningless or untrue.
4. A custom, practice, behavior, etc. regarded as distinctive of a particular group. / In the late '60s, however, the loud, open use of the "F" word became a true shibboleth, dividing the student radicals from the Establishment "pigs" they delighted in tweaking. --Elizabeth Austin, "A small plea to delete a ubiquitous expletive: can't we all get along without the 'f' word?" US News & World Report, April 6, 1998
Newspapers accused the West of trying to foment anti-Russian feelings and revive the cold war, substituting the old "Soviet threat" with the new shibboleth "Russian mafia." --Michael Satchell, "Kremlin gilt - or is it guilt?" US News & World Report, September 20, 1999
Most cases, she says, involve the charges of secular humanism -- a "shibboleth invented by far-right organizations and others who object to textbooks, library books and curriculum materials that do not promote their particular brand of religion." --Thomas S. Elliott, "Fight heats up over censoring schoolbooks," US News & World Report, February 20, 1984
Class size is another shibboleth: First, small class sizes do not increase learning, and, second, class sizes have become quite small anyway. --Jay Nordlinger, "The Anti-Excusers," National Review, October 27, 2003
This could not be stated, because the doctrines in the name of which the revolution was carried out -- and which, ironically enough, the revolution did so much to expose and discredit -- were too strongly ingrained as official radical shibboleths to which lip-service was still paid. --Isaiah Berlin, The Sense of Reality
Christmas church attendance will be the last shibboleth of Christian devotion in Europe to fall: it has a wealth of sentiment, mid-winter cheer and good tunes to keep pulling the crowds. --Madeleine Bunting, "Paralysed by panic," Guardian, December 20, 2004
Etymology: Shibboleth is from Hebrew shibboleth, "stream, flood," from the use of this word in the Bible (Judges 12:4-6) as a test to distinguish Gileadites from Ephraimites, who could not say 'sh' but only 's' as in 'sibboleth'.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!
Here is my example with WFTD.
If the lefties can persist in the shibboleth of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, surely turnabout is fair play.]

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!

LIBERALS HAVE been apoplectic over Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's recent videotaped address to a rally sponsored by the Family Research Council, a Christian group. They've dragged out the old shibboleth of "separation of church and state," claiming that an elected official has no business mixing his religious and political views. Some newspapers have gone as far as warning their readers that they should worry, as though a theocracy is threatening to replace the Constitution.
The price of the tickets for my 20 yr class reunion helped me decide. $75 each???!!! No thanks.
They look delicious.....I won't worry about those nasty carbs or cholesterol, or calories, either LOL.......(just got read riot act from MD concerning diet etc)....my comment..."I became a friend of Bill W's 26 years ago...5 years after that I had to quit smoking....I gotta have SOME vices!!!!!!" LOL
Hmmm... is that an F-22 waving it's wings at us?
And, A G3 has 3 rather large heat sources in a relatively small area making it a easy, easy, target for a heatseeker. (I chose a G3 simply because I used to love to fly them...for real fun, though, nothing beats the early Lears, especially when it's just you, the plane, and a whole lotta uncontrolled airspace. There was a time when one could have a lot of fun, but alas, that has gone a long time ago, far before 9/11 which really put the period on to most of the enjoyable end of flying...Since I hold both fixed and helo ratings, two of my favorite flights, and ones I flew charters for regularly, besides what I did on the job, were the "beltway tour" around WashDC, which. is pretty much what it says, once you cleared in with approach control, you were cleared to fly around the beltway (inner or outer), and as long as you avoided the couple of prohibited areas (WH,Capitol, Wash Monument, etc, which are plainly marked on the charts) you could get a great view of the city, especially at night. it was a beautiful flight, and I never tired of doing it, the slower the better. The other one I enjoyed was the VFR flyway around Manhattan Island, where you could fly around 800' all around the island, and look UP at the buildings. I get a real eerie feeling about that one though, I flew a helo on that tour back in '98, the last year I flew, and remember looking up at the WTC towers and waving at the people in the offices, and having them wave back, and it churns me inside every time I think about it... those floors where the people were waving, well, you can figure it out....I can't think of anything but payback now..
Sure used to be a beautiful flight, especially, again at night...the city lit up against the dark water, and I was always too busy to get pix (charters don't pay co-pilots LOL), so its you at 100 percent all the time......
Thanks for the HB though, appreciate it....
Excellent work! A+++
I am thinking we should excuse you from class and send you to the hot tub today to soothe that angry set of nerves in your shoulder.
It sure took them long enough............I remember all the talk and specualtion about this last spring when it seemed another suitcase of bady parts was being picked up almost daily for a week.
I didn't realize it had been posted.
Yes. It is not unlike the other case. They are both cold blooded killers.
yes and we are going to hell for laughing at them, just as we were condemned to hellfire by the poster that is a friend of Jennifer Willbanks for making fun of her.
Are you series? There is a FOJW (friend of Jennifer Wilbanks) posting on FR?
yes and he is very sad about all the abuse being heaped on her. RME. as i said on that thread, i am sure it is different knowing those two, but honest to GOD, if you act like a cartoon character, expect to be depicted as such. i know i would fully expect the rest of the reasoning world to ridicule me if i had carried on like that.
A male FOJW? Did he confirm that her breasts are fakes.....
She should have just checked the luggage on a Delta Airlines flight. It would have never been located.
Either that, or she should have just driven over his arse with her SUV.
do i have to link you to the thread my own self?; ) yes male. and i don't think he has manually inspected the hooters.
If a person acts like that, they are invited ridicule, even if they have real issues. I'm sorry she has real issues, but for those of her who don't know her personally, you know the temptation is just to great to not make some jokes.
She didn't have to do it that way. She could have left a dear john note when she left and she wouldn't be in the hot water she's in.
I feel sorry for her for making her bed hard, but jokes follow doing things like that.
