Late one night last week, I saw the newly restored version of "The High and the Mighty" on AMC. The movie hasn't been shown in decades. One of the first disaster genre fims, it also has a beautiful, haunting theme melody, which is whistled along with a lush orchestration. It stays with you. You can't get it out of your mind. I started thinking as to what other great songs have come from movies, and wondered what your favorites might be...
1. "The High and the Mighty" theme
2. "Tara's Theme" from Gone with the Wind
3. "San Francisco" from the Clark Gable/Jeanette McDonald film
4. "Lawrence of Arabia" theme
5. "Colonel Bogey March" from "The Bridge on the River Kwai"
6. Theme from "Chariots of Fire"
7. Theme from "The Guns of Navaronne"..Dmitri Tiompkin's best, IMHO
8. Theme from the "Godfather"
9. "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca
10. "Somewhere over the Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz"
A few other brief comments:
1. Two very catchy orchestrations, in fact THE signature pieces of their films, but IMHO not really "songs" and therefore excluded from my list:
a) "Jaws" shark music
b) Five note sequence from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"
2. Worst, most saccharine, and waaay overrated : "Lara's Theme" from "Dr. Zhivago"
BTW..if anyone has any midis they want to link and share..please do so..
Something to ponder on a hot, humid, hazy, lazy Friday..
Live and let die
Harry Potter--- Hedwigs Theme
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
The Great Escape
"Men of Harlech" -- Zulu
Rocky is pretty good.
Oh yeah...right..and here's another.."Alfie"..the original movie..sung by the late, great Carmen McRae..
I have not read, nor seen anything HP..
(If what I just wrote makes you sad or angry,
Apparently, nobody who has posted so far has seen "Shaft". There is no better theme than that.
"That Thing You Do".
GMTA!!
I don't think I can claim any one song for a theme, but I LOVE soundtracks and movie scores.
Dances with Wolves
Rainman
The Commitments
Top Gun
Footloose
Born on the Fourth of July
The Color Purple
Witness (I would love getting that on CD)
Lord of the Rings
Natural Born Killers (the Leonard Cohen stuff was great in that)
That's my ten. Rainman has some great tunes on its soundtrack, inlcuding Etta James' "At Last", and Hans Zimmer's scoring is unreal. I used some if it for my college video projects as background music.
What's your favorite movie theme song of all time?
Easy -
"She Caught the Katy" - Taj Mahal - Theme to the Blues Brothers Movie
No question
I like the theme from the Pink Panther Movies.
She caught the katy
And left me a mule to ride
She caught the katy
And left me a mule to ride
Now my baby caught the katy
Left me a mule to ride
The train pulled out
I swung on behind
Crazy bout her
That hard headed woman of mine
Man, my babys long
Great gosh almighty my babys tall
You know my babys long
Great gosh almighty my babys tall
Yeah my baby shes long
My baby shes tall
Shes sleepin with her head in the kitchen
And her feets out in the hall
Crazy bout her
That hard headed woman of mine
Well I love my baby
Shes so fine
But I wish shed come and see me some time
She dont believe in our love, ah
Look whatta hole Im in
She dont believe what Im sayin
Kid look whatta shape Im in
Huh-huh
She caught the katy
And left me a mule to ride
She caught the katy
And left me a mule to ride
Well my baby caught the katy
Left me a mule to ride
The train pulled out
I swung on behind
Crazy bout that hard headed woman
Hard headed woman of mine
Huh-huh, huh-huh
Everything on the BB soundtrack was great.
I HAVE TO dance everytime I hear "Shake your Tailfeathers"
