What Were the Best Fries You've Had? (Pure Vanity)
myself | 8/5/2005 | Pyro7480

I think the best fries I've ever had are from a place in Ocean City, MD and Rehoboth Beach, DE called Thrasher's Fries. They're made from freshly-cut Idaho potatoes, and served without ketchup. Old Bay seasoning, salt, and vinegar are available though.

The best large chain restaurant fries I've had are the waffle fries at Chick-fil-A. While they are frozen during shipment, they're still consistently good. In terms of small chains in the area where I live, the best fries I can readily get are at a small chain in northern Virginia (and now in DC) called Five Guys. They are also made from fresh potatoes.

Chick-Fil-A.

God I wish those people would sell stock in it.

I'm glad you concur. My first summer job was at a Chick-fil-A. Talk about temptation!

I like both Fatburger's thick fries and In & Out's friend (though I&O's burgers are the best)!

No particular place, but probably either fries I had in Italy (fried in olive oil), or in Germany (where I believe they fry 'em in lard). And I like them with malt vinegar and lots of salt rather than ketchup - or mayo, which is what they generally gave ya in Germany.

I've gotten to really like them with salt and vinegar. I don't know why I never tried it earlier in life (probably because I was a ketchup fiend), but I know what I missed now!

I've heard that from a lot of folks - that for serious fries, go to Belgium. I'd be up for it.

Mmmm...fries...

You know, what with all the stuff coming out on transfats lately, I wonder if people will be returning to using more lard in cooking. It wouldn't be a bad thing! It's all but necessary for the best biscuits and pie crusts, IMO.

Rut's Hut in Paterson New Jersey, home of Lou Costello. This was in the late 40s and eqarly 50s. The potatoes were peeled and cut while you waited and the wait was worth it!

My mom's. She cuts the potato's nice & wide & deep cooks them slowly. Yum-Yum! The worst: Wendys!

Nathan's. Even the frozen fries sold in the supermarket are delicious. They are crunchy on the outside and firm and potatoey (is that a word?), on the inside.

Good, isn't it? I love salt and vinegar potato chips, too...even though the best of 'em will leave your mouth raw.

Another fine fries combo that sounds weird but is awesome is poutine. Weird French-Canadian thing, but I grew up near the border of Quebec, sooo...

It's fries and cheese topped with gravy. Talk about fattening, but very tasty!

I'm for it if it would send Jerold Nadler into hiding.

Tough, tough question.

The problem is, even the places with the best fries will vary from batch to batch and day to day. It's all too possible to recommend a place to someone, only to have them get a bad batch and wonder what you're smoking.

That said, I think Steak n Shake's thin fries are great. You have to eat them while they're hot, though. Once they get cool they kind of suck. And I remember a barbecue place in Savannah a long time ago that was fantastic -- cooked the fries in lard for that extra-crispy, artery clogging goodness.

It's easier for me to list the places that are consistently BAD: Checkers, BK,...any place that puts any kind of "coating" on fries.

Fries? Beer?

I can think of better things to do the "best I ever had" thing over. In high school there will this blonde haired girl named Roberta......
