Are any of you 'O' blood type?

Are any of you 'O' blood type?

i found out this morning that my 40 year old cousin Sharon, who has a very small child, was told that she will die very soon without a kidney transplant. she's in last stage renal failure now. she inherited this disease from her mom, who was in the same situation 6 years ago, and who is fine now, thanks to a transplant her husband, my cousin Steven, gave her. i'm getting tested tomorrow, but am afraid i'm AB blood type. this transplant is done with no residual effect for the donor. they do it laparascopically (sp) and the donor recovers within a few days or weeks. they need an O blood type donor, and the person mustn't have high blood pressure. my cousin Steven's email is sskatz23 at yahoo.com and their number is (732)493-3589. please contact him, or me, if you're an O and would consider this--and please please forward this message widely. it doesn't look very good, and it doesn't look like there's much time, but a transplant would save her...

love, liz

Is this legit? I am missing something here. IIRC, type "O" is the most common blood type. It should not be hard to find someone with this type. If I am way off here, someone please educate me.

O positive or negative? Does it matter? How high does the blood pressure have to be to disqualify someone? What state are they in? What would have to be done to get this started? Do tattoos matter?

I assume her blood type is O+ . It may help in your search to specify. I'll spread your post around where I can. God bless you and your cousins family.

Sorry I can't help you with a kidney. I pray an appropriate donor will turn up.

In the meantime, it is very important that Sharon follow her nephrologist's advice. Patients with end stage renal disease can live many years with proper medication, nutrition and above all regular dialysis treatments.

If Sharon is getting in-center hemodialysis, make sure she does not skip any treatments. Getting four hours of dialysis three times a week is not fun, but the only alternative is death.

Most deaths among ESRD patients occur within 90 days of when dialysis starts. The patients who can't adjust or skip treatments die, it may sound brutal to say so, but it's true. Once the initial 90 days is over, mortality improves significantly

732 is a Central Jersey area code. Type O is just one of several factors that must be matched. I have type O but unfortunately high blood pressure. This hits home. My prayers for Sharon. Why is dialysis not an answer?

I am just trying to help out an old friend. I am not familiar with the details nor am I type 'O'.

How high does the blood pressure have to be to disqualify someone?

It depends upon how well controlled the blood pressure is, how long it has been present, and whether it has already begun to damage the kidneys. Some transplant centers would thoroughly evaluate the kidney function of a prospective donor, including a kidney biopsy, to make sure they are not transplanting a defective organ.

Am I wrong in assuming that they would probably prefer to test donors in New Jersey first? I am not type O, but I will speak to my husband who is. I understand you're not familiar with every detail, but it would help if we knew what, exactly, we would have to do...

Not only does the person need to be type 0 but willing to donate a kidney. Going to be difficult to find anyone willing to do so.

I'm on a national marrow donor registry and have been for 14 years. There are three levels of screening and I've only ever been asked to go as far as the second level of screening. I'm assuming the same sorts of screenings are required for organ donation. There are something like 28 different blood factors that have to be taken into account.

what would be the risk the the donor, rather than recipient, with high blood pressure? Would the high blood pressure tend to get worse?

THANK YOU! I received a bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor on November 26, 1991. 14 year cancer free anniversary is coming up for me.

from www.bethmiriam.org

The daughter of one of our congregants, Steve and Zelda Katz, whose name is Sharon Tanner, is in dire need of a kidney transplant from a live donor with blood type O. She has experienced end-state renal failure and has begun dialysis treatments. She has a four year old daughter, Claudia, who was named at a Beth Miriam soon after her birth.

This young child is in danger of losing a mother to kidney disease if someone with type 0 blood, in good health (e.g. normal blood pressure) does not come forward to donate a kidney. Zelda's sister contracted the same disease when she was Sharon's age and died 30 years ago leaving two young children to grow up without a mother.

The situation has gotten recently worse and Sharon can die if she does not get help. It would be ironic if the good story which began six years ago with her father's successfully donating a kidney to save her mother, ended in tragedy with the death of our daughter from the same disease. Sharon's husband and brother have not been permitted to be donors because both suffer from high blood pressure.

If you know of ANYONE who might be able to help, please be in touch with the rabbi. Feel free to call him at the temple at 732-222-3754.

Would the high blood pressure tend to get worse?

Not necessarily, but remember, hypertension if untreated, or poorly treated, can lead to kidney damage (in addition to many other organs) and if you have only one kidney, there is increased risk of developing kidney failure.

I would love to get the call that they have found a match for me. How sweet it would be to save someone's life! For now, I just give blood. Congrats on your healing, and thanks to God.
