Woman Gets Donkey for Her 50th Birthday

FARGO, N.D. - Former attorney general and governor candidate Heidi Heitkamp, a well-known Democrat, got a surprise birthday president from her brother that fits her politics, though maybe not her yard.

Heitkamp said she woke up Saturday morning to find a young donkey in her yard, a 50th birthday present from her brother, Joel.

"It's just about the cutest thing you ever want to see," Heitkamp said. "My biggest problem is, I can't figure out how to warm up a two-quart bottle."

Heitkamp said the young donkey is well behaved, but has a habit of braying loudly when trains pass near her Mandan home.

Heitkamp said her family has a history of unusual gifts.

"We're fond of giving each other live animals, and these animals have only progressively gotten larger," she said. "So Joel, he's going to get something very large and four-legged."

When I turned four my uncle gave me a drum set for my birthday.

Several months later my dad had a friend that was moving and had a little furry rat dog that they were trying to find a home for and my dad gave it to my uncle’s daughter for her birthday.

The twist there was that the little furry dog was pregnant and had four pups shortly after my cousin got it.

That marked the end of the smart-ass gift giving, as I recall it.

I personally would love to have a fainting goat! My friend's uncle has one. Ironically enough, they live next to a shooting range.

I would settle for Hogan's goat.

They are wonderful little critters! I love all mine and look forward to the spring when hopefully I'll have two more!

You know, that may have been the one time Clinton was hugging a woman he DIDN'T want to boink!

Funny how the term "jackass" or even just "ass" is never used when referring to the Dem symbol....

Yup, lots of luck just obtaining an elephant to leave as a present, much less keep it in your yard as the recipient.

As a Dem, her ass is out in left field.

Woman should change to the Republican Party and straighten her ass out.

My sister has a shetland pony that is just adorable. She is looking for a mini donk. She has had goats and horses in the past, but the pony she has now will just make your heart melt. A mini donk would be a hoot!

I gave my husband a miniature goat for Father's Day...he was sooooo cute.

Then he grew-up and became a smelly, randy goat. We gave him to a farmer for a horse companion animal.....I guess it ended well.

A card we found in an old car that was junked in the '50s- "Admit one to the Greenville Donkey Roast, everyone gets a piece of ass!"

It's only appropriate that a Jackass should care for a donkey.

Okay, I'm going to be the buzzkill here.

Livestock is not a gag gift.

I hope she makes some arrangement for a decent home for the donkey.

Sheesh. God save me from those sensitive, compassionate Democrats.

She might end up liking the little fellow so much she does the research and learns to care for him properly. It does sound like it's a possibility...like she's not a complete monster.

I've been in the unwitting owner of unplanned animals situation myself with a rat that turned out to be pregnant but deceptively scrawny when I got her....while I wasn't PREPARED (at the time) for the task of raising and keeping 7 rats of both genders happy and healthy instead of the 2 original females I'd planned, by the time they were old enough to act like rats rather than generic baby animals I had done the research needed on housing, personality, and care that things worked out.

Sometimes ppl step up. Let's not ASSume she won't. :-)
