Cat Interrupts Catnap, Possibly Saving Two

MANCHESTER, Pa. -- A cat interrupted a catnap, possibly saving two lives. Jean Poole and her 9-month-old granddaughter were dozing Tuesday in Poole's home in the Newberry Estates mobile home park. Poole's 7-year-old cat, Princess, woke them up, meowing loudly. Poole got up, smelled smoke and heard crackling flames. She went to check the wood burning stove in the living room, and saw flames at the picture window. With fire blocking the front door, Poole grabbed the baby and went out the rear door. Then she returned to get Princess. "She woke me up. I don't know if I'd have smelled the smoke otherwise," Poole said. Arriving firefighters found flames were shooting through the roof. Scott Glassmyer, assistant chief of the Newberry Township Fire Company, said the blaze apparently started accidentally in a trash can outside, ignited the underside of the mobile home, spread inside the siding and broke through to the interior.

Can you do this with a cat? I think not!

A dog is like having a smelly kid.

I'm someone who cherishes all animals, literally. I've rescued dogs, cats, horses and even the occasional tortise. I have a cat I rescued when she was a kitten about 13 years ago.

But I have to tell you in all sincerity that I have never had closer or more dear non-human companions than my two beloved dogs, Annabelle and Wolfie. They were littermates who I had from birth. They are gone now. Wolfie in Feb. 2004 (at 14+) and Annabelle last April (at 15+). There isn't a day goes by that I don't miss them, and there isn't a cat, dog or horse alive who could take their place in my heart.

I grew up with many dogs too.....from Minature Schnauzers to German Shepards....and I never had the same connection anywhere near what I have with a cat. Cats are intelligent....and have alot of emotion. People just don't give them a chance.

My cat (of uncertain age, although around 13) has decided the best place to be when I'm at the computer is in my lap. I would not mind this at all except for two things: (1) She's the type of cat who never seems to retract her claws all the way, and (2) she never quite seems to find just the right spot in my lap.

Only a matter of time until she realizes that the right spot is on the keyboard.

Grin...you're right. She sits on the keyboard when I'm not at the computer. I've been putting a protective piece of cardboard over it, and she now sits on that. When I'm at the computer, she gets in my lap, settles in for a bit, gets out of my lap onto the desk, then back again. That must be how she discovered the keyboard worked as a seat for her.
