Skip to comments. The Return of the Dixie Chicks (Bill O'Reilly)
Posted on 05/10/2006 10:01:59 AM PDT by RabidBartender
Three years ago at the beginning of the Iraq war, the lead singer of the Dixie Chicks, Natalie Maines, told a concert crowd in London, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United Sates is from Texas." That statement set off a firestorm against the Chicks. Many Americans saw the quote as unpatriotic, especially in a time of war.
Subsequently, Miss Maines apologized for the tone of her remarks, but stands by her opposition to the Bush administration. Now the Dixie Chicks have a new CD which some stations will not play the lead single from, a song that says the Chicks aren't ready to back down from anything. It's a pretty good song. There is no reason not to play it. At a Time magazine event last night, I ran into Natalie Maines, who is not exactly my No. 1 fan. She chided me for predicting on this program that the new CD she has out would sell just two million units, which is pretty good these days. We had a discussion about it a few weeks ago. She saw the show.

>>>My wife HAD every Dixie Chicks CD, and loved their music, After Manes rant against Dubya, she threw them all away >>>
My (very) liberal father doesn't understand and thinks it's stupid to not listen to music because of something someone said. I said I can't help this uncomfortable feeling everytime I heard them now.
What's sad is those two very very talented sisters getting strung along by that stupid ninny they have singing for them.
I disagree. I think they are a pretty good group and very pleasant sounding. Prior to their becoming idiots, I really enjoyed their music. I don't anymore, because even though it is still good music, the politics gets in the way for me.
Which is too bad. They have come up with some pretty good stuff.
The Dixie Chicks seem to be entertainers of average or less than average intelligence compounded by being educated in our dumbed down government schools. More power to them. As for me I never heard of them until the controversy overseas. Like other Democrats they have ZERO class.
If they just make a new album and don't spend the next few weeks playing the victim, I will agree with O'Reilly. However, if they promote this album by reveling in their victimhood and dredging up the past, I will continue to ingnore them, because they will be jerks in the present tense as well.
You are wrong!! Susan Sarandon made a fantastic comeback in "Team America". I just can't get enough of watching her part in that movie!

Wasn't she a member of F.A.G.?
Yeah, I was wondering what the deal with Clooney and Sudan was. That's only been going on for decades now and suddenly he becomes aware of the situation????
I work in a professional setting. If I make in a very agressive way my opinions known that offend my clients, I will feel the affects.
When will dumb 'artists' learn this?
You want to stand on principle, then stand on principle like all the other starving artists.
LOVE anything by the Smashing Pumpkins.
I'm trying to get my mind around that.
Hmmm, maybe other stations are playing their songs but I have yet to hear any of our 3 local country stations play anything by them since the 'famous comment' by Natalie M.
She could loose all her weight, she is still fat and ugly.
I can't imagine any advertiser wanting to be next to Blixi Chix songs.
Sorry but this female dogs are DOA.
....and with a dingy wife-beater t-shirt stained with the juice of that demon of all demons....TOBACCO.
O,Reilly has gotten so consumed with himself, he's lost all reason. As far as the traitor singers, let them rot.
Re: the caption at the bottom.... didn't the 2004 election mean anything?
Maines made a huge miscalculation with her stupid foray into the political arena and has been stunned by the backlash.
What I don't understand with artists is whether they make these statements due to an obsession with self and thinking that others want to hear what they think or if they honestly believe most people agree with them.
>>You have a right to reject her beliefs and not to buy her stuff. But to punish her further is not in the spirit of America.
And that's "The Memo."<<
What do you expect from Blowhard? He defended Dan Rather, and opposed the Swift Boat Vets.
For a brief moment, Apple was pushing their song "Not ready to Play Nice" on the ITunes site...then they gave up. Don't know how well the song is doing, but I haven't heard it played on my country music station here in N. CA.
I look at it as if I buy their stuff then I am supporting them in what they say...good music, good movie, good book...it don't matter anymore it's what do they believe and if it is opposed to my view, then they can stick it....well except for the da Vincie code...I will see it.
They should follow a few conservatives around any college campus to learn what real censorship is.
I lost my ping list! :(
...Or a loofah
I'm never wrong....misguided occasionally, but never wrong! Susan Sarandon is a blowhard, end of career actor with no sense of right from wrong. A liberal with a manifesto that won't quit. That you liked her role in a movie is great for her, but I wouldn't cross the street and spit on her if she was on fire.
"He's stupidity re: the oil companies proved that, if nothing. "

On Planet O'Blowhard, apparently being ignored = "remains under siege."
She's not under siege, Bill. She got kicked to the curb by former fans. And if Miz Bigmouth Maines can't take the heat, maybe she should keep her insults about the president, the city of Lubbock, the country music establishment, and country music fans to herself.
You haven't seen "Team America" yet? You should. I'd bet you'd love her comeback, too!
Ours is still boycotting them too. They haven't played a Dixie Chicks song since the whole thing started.
Bonnie Raitt's Landslide will erase your memory of any previous version. Smokin'!
There's something about him that reminds me of Chevy Chase. Keep expecting him to stand behind one of his guests and pick his nose or make funny faces while they're talking.
The Dixie Chicks' "Not Ready To Make Nice" peaked at number 36 on last weeks ACC top 40. This week it isn't on the chart.
Where's Earl when you need him?
Bwah! You owe me a new keyboard! ROFL
Yeah, same thing with Hitler - give him a break - some of his paintings weren't that bad...
Best has done thus far was 23 on the Billboard charts. It did peak at 8 on some digital music chart, though.
I also heard that the album has been a colossal flop thus far. I guess that whole "We're more rock than country anyway" angle isn't playing out as well as they had hoped!
I liked the DC back when they just sang. When Natalie opened her mouth and refused to shut it, even after she was pimp-slapped, I lost interest. I used to feel bad for the sisters being taken down with Natalie on this, until I heard them say they supported her 100%. Then they backed her when she came out and disparaged country music fans, who fed her fat arse and put her in a mansion. I lost whatever sympathies I had for them at that point.
And for BOR, I don't know if there truly were death threats. I can see it happening as there are some whack jobs out there. However, their demise is due to their own arrogance and lack of understanding the basics of marketing and their target audience. If they had acknowledged they were wrong to attack the President on foreign soil, acknowledged that they were wrong to characterize him in the way they did, they could have still said they disagreed with him on the Iraq war and I think they would have been fine. Some would ahve stopped listening, but not nearly as many as have now.
I agree with BOR that they should not be targeted for physiical harm, but if they suffer having to play 20 seat lizard lounges for the rest of their careers, then as far as I am concerned, they deserve every minute of it.
Never heard of 'em.
I had all their stuff as well. Threw them out. Will never give them one red penny again. That's my right as an American. She can record all day long, but I don't have to support her.
Their album won't be released until May 23. Their handlers are busy trying to push another single from the album onto country radio.
If they had just come out with a regular Chicks tune, they would likely have been on the radio again and could paint the anti-Chick folks as being intolerant. But instead they chose to stick it in the face of country music and re-open old wounds.
They're not on in Kansas City or St. Joseph, MO as far as I can tell.
Somehow I don't think Hildebeast has the same talents as monica.
FNC is waaaaay tilting. Especially with the recent effort to use Mary Cheney's book as a tactic to speak against the VERY POPULAR Federal Marriage Amendment.
There is no point to watching Bill-O because he is "the same as" other pretenders. I obtain more factual information and analysis from Rush, Laura Ingram, Hanity, Bennet, and Medved than any Oreily show.
Lets not forget he is originally a tabloid show personality. A blixie chix comeback effort is exactly his type of tabloid TV.
This is in keeping with his BS michael moore interview chase. (remember he was INVITED AND WENT to the f911 NY premier)
happens to everyone surrounded by "yes" people
Nobody is punishing Natalie Maines. She is punishing herself. She is an attention addict who can't help acting stupid and immature in public.
Here are the rules of every day common sense Bill: A person says something stupid...People are entitled to tell them that they are full of sh*t.
"You have a right to reject her beliefs and not to buy her stuff. But to punish her further is not in the spirit of America."
Yuh. When BOR spoke that line, I'm thinking, "WTF?!" We have every right to punish her further -- even forever. And we will.
I have received occupational death threats more times than I can count. I have also had a couple of attempts on my life through no fault of my own. These attempts were by people that were pure evil and meant to finish me off. I would have loved to have had Natalie Maines kind of problems while I dealt with these situations.
People still not wanting to buy their stuff probably.. word of mouth is a very powerful thing.
