Police surround house in five-hour standoff, but nobody home
Peninsula Daily News ^ | 7/17/06 | ANDREW BINION

A five-hour standoff between Port Angeles police and a reportedly suicidal woman with a knife Friday afternoon ended without a bang, or a whimper.

She wasn't there.

Police responded to a house on the 1500 block of South K Street at 1:30 p.m. after a woman told 9-1-1 dispatchers that her adult daughter had barricaded herself inside with a knife and was suicidal.

At least four officers and one Clallam County sheriff's deputy responded to the scene.

One officer watching the back of the residence was armed with an assault rifle.

Police closed off the street immediately in front of the house and began attempting to make contact with the woman.

First negotiators tried then the phone inside, then used a ``throw phone'' common in crisis negotiations, and finally blared a bullhorn siren.

Neighbors watch

Meanwhile, neighbors and children stood outside, watching.

A State Patrol bomb squad robot device was brought to the scene, Port Angeles Police Cpl. Kevin Miller said Saturday.

The robot was deployed inside the residence, but couldn't find her.

The house was empty the whole time, Miller said.

Officers cleared the scene at 6:17 p.m., he said.

Why would an assault rifle be necessary for a potential suicide with a knife?

It wouldn't. For handling an unruly and disobedient citizen, however, whose loyalty to the very state might even be in question, an assault rifle is an absolutely necessary tool to ensure the continued peace and safety of all the other loyal citizens. ;)

Have you ever gone to a police standoff where the only thing missing was the looney?

Sounds like severe over reaction to me - Perhaps an indication of where the police are coming from these days.
Was the mother contacted later?

Exactly right ...they didn't storm the house. Seems to me they did the right thing here. Isolated, contained and secured the scene acting on the info they had at the time, atempted to establish contact with the woman to see if she was okay then verify if she was home.

I'm a former SWAT cop and I've been on more than a few scenes where the bad guy was able to slip out of a house before everything was in place. It happens alot and besides this was probably the most excitement this town has had in a long time...8>)

I lived in Port Angeles for about five years. Although there are many things to not like about Port Angeles, I thought the police were pretty professional. I dealt with them when my office was burglarized and I also belonged to a couple of civic orgnizations where we interacted with the local police.

I live in Spokane now and there have been several local incidents recently that question the professional quality of the police force here. Mark Furhman, of OJ fame, has local radio show and he frequently is critical of the local police
