Barbaro Continues Steady Improvement

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Kentucky Derby champion Barbaro continues to gradually improve from injuries suffered in the Preakness, veterinarians in Pennsylvania said Tuesday.

Barbaro suffered injuries to three bones in and around his right hind ankle at the start of the Preakness on May 20. It was feared the horse, which had won the Kentucky Derby by 6 1/2 lengths, would have to be destroyed.

But Barbaro has been making progress while at the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital, where veterinarians said the horse's improvement was gradual.

"He had an excellent week," said Dr. Dean Richardson, chief of surgery at the hospital.

Richardson said Barbaro is "enjoying his daily excursions outside to graze and his appetite is excellent."

Thanks for the info. He's not been in the news much anyway. I'm glad he's doing as well as he is.

God Bless Barbaro...

It looks quite hopeful at this point in Barbaro's recovery.

Yes it does.

But, we'll know so much more I guess when they finally take off the cast(s).

I was always sorry they couldn't save Ruffian. I'm glad Barbaro is a fighter!

Great news. They showed him on the local news tonight and he was grazing outside. They said that they just had a bandage on the sore hoof and had changed the cast on the broken leg.

This is great news. I know the doctors continue to be cautious, as they must, but my hope for Barbaro's eventual recovery is still strong.

Another notch on the "hope" side of things is just wonderful. Barbaro remains in my thoughts and prayers.

That is great news. I was more concerned with the laminitis than I was with the fractures.
