Wow! So much for the Phillies' procrastination again.
First they pass on Leyland, now Piniella.

If this were true, he wouldn’t remain unemployed very long. Being the best baseball manager of all times, the offers would be coming his way quickly. I’m sure that many team owners have been praying for years that he would get fired so they could make him an offer he couldn’t refuse

Torre is done, he can't bring anything new to the table to get the team past their inability to win in the post season.

I hope he brings in Dusty Baker. The Yankees will get close, like they have the last few years, but then the team will be ruined for a decade.

How'd Lou do in Tampa?

Let's see... --> http://www.baseball-reference.com/managers/pinielo01.shtml

Anyway, just heard the "quit or be fired" story on Fox Sports radio (via WEEI). They're saying by bringin Lou in, it's intended to save A-Rod's career (due to the numbers he put up while they were both in Seattle).

'The Boss' knows what accountability is all about. Guess that's why he'd never make a good politician.

I don't believe that. If it was my team, I'd stick with Torre. (but maybe they should bring back Joe Girardi. It was after he left they had this problem.)

That's because most Yankee fans are transplants and trendites who love the boys in pinstripes when they win, but avoid them like the plague when they lose.

The Yankees are learning the same lesson they did against the LA Dodgers in the 1960s: Good pitching ALWAYS beats good hitting.

his numbers in NY don't seem to be a drastic drop off. well, not one that can't be explained by being 7 or 8 years older now than he was then.

Good pitching ALWAYS beats good hitting

A lot of that going on in Boston this year, I can tell you that (Sox fan here). Man what a painful second half of the season that was. But the salve that helps an awful lot was applied when the Tigers (the TIGERS!) spanked the MFY's. I LOVE IT!

Throwing in one farm-grown player and writing big checks doesn't make a team. The Boss thinks he's getting the players' numbers from two seasons prior, then lets the GM and Manager take the fall.

(Still, I'd take either job. FReepmail me, Boss!)

I think he would prefer to go someplace else - the fans don't like him anymore, and I don't think his team-mates are too fond of him.

ARod is paid an astronomical amount of money and doesn't deliver, and they fire the Manager. Go figure.

Every baseball thread gets someone who preaches this same stuff. I understand your problem with it, but it gets old. We get why you all stopped watching.

No offense, but the comments of this type usually have little to do with the discussion at hand (this thread is regarding Joe Torre), just the person ripping Major League Baseball. There are still plenty of us who DO care about it.

Of course they do. How much baseball knowledge did that guy have in his head? Why do you think Pedro tried to kill him? (joke). I think Torre used to refer to him all the time.

Pinniella as manager, what a laugh. He couldn’t pour piss out of a boot if the directions were written on the bottom, let alone couch a baseball team. Show me a team he has couched that was as consistent as Torre’s Yankess!

I think 116 wins in 2001 is pretty "consistent", no?

I didn't ask anyone to play a sad little tune for me here in the Lone Star State... as a matter of fact I wore my NY Yankee jersey while out for a beer and a movie this evening (and yes I saw them lose on tv to a deserving Detriot Tiger team that played with a heck of a lot of heart/determination).

Obviously it will not happen this year, but I bet the Bronx Bombers win #27 before a few other MLB teams do.

Remember, "history" don't mean sh-t in sports. Its how you perform RIGHT HERE AND NOW!

Yank-me "fans" always bring up the "history" of their team, never mind the fact that most of those wins occurred in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1970s.

Get ready for the Yankees of 1979-1992: Competative to second division, but never getting the brass ring.

If you've got the numbers up, check out Lou's overall W/L tenure with the M's, who were probably worse than Tampa Bay when he started.

- from someone who threw a party for a team finishing over .500 for the first time twenty-odd years ago.

Can you guarantee 100% that your team's players are drug-/'roid-free?

If so, pour me a tall glass of that Kool Aid you're drinkin', but not before I finish a shot of Johnny Walker Blue.
