COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Rev. Ted Haggard admitted Friday he bought methamphetamine and received a massage from a gay prostitute who claims he was paid for drug-fueled trysts by the former head of the National Association of Evangelicals.

"I bought it for myself but never used it," Haggard told reporters gathered outside his home. "I was tempted, but I never used it."

Haggard, 50, said he never had sex with Mike Jones, a 49-year-old Denver man who raised the allegations this week. Haggard said he received a massage from Jones after being referred to him by a Denver hotel.

For some reason this guy never has seemed honest to me...

If this is true it harms the ministry, even though, they like all of us are humans and all have sinned and fallen short. By dang, this is not good for the cause. Reminds me of a minister we had once, that admited an affair he was having. He preached then at the end of the service went all through the confessions.... I was only about 10, but it scared me to death.....

Sounds like the public confession of former evangelist Jimmy Swaggert. He went to motels with prostitutes but he never had sex just looked at them naked. Yeah, right! (sarc)

Let us not forget that we have all sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God.Pray for Haggard and his family and his congregation. But we really need to butt out and let the Pastor solve this between the people he needs to solve it with ie: His congregation, his wife, his kids, and mostly with his God. At this point he does not sound very repentent. And hopefully it comes, but it's really none of our business.

"He is the Pastor of a church of 14,000 and President of the National Association of Evangelicals with 30,000,000 members."

Not anymore he's not.

Sure. He ordered it more than once, and didn't use it. Yeah...I believe him...no question.

Got a massage, too. A prostate massage, perhaps?

This guy's toast.

I do feel vindicated, as I have been bashing Haggard for years over his attempts to Bush global warming on Bush under the guise of Christianity. ("What Would Jesus Drive", etc)

I didn't know he was one of them. I wouldn't trust the Christian Greenies any more than I would trust the National Council of Churches.

I have some degree of pity for those whom, like Rush or Jerry Lewis, become addicted because they started out killing pain. But to become addicted to something that has no application but pleasure...that just makes me sad.

Wonder what his salary was? A pastor of a church that large has to bring in 150,000.00 or more.......

"Can someone tell me why this story matters? Is the guy running for office or something? I heard Rush talking a bit about it, but still don't get why MSNBC is making a big deal out it!!"

He's not running for office, but I gather that there is some kind of "defense of marriage" proposition on the ballot in Colorado, and Ted Haggard has come out strong in favor of it, so I guess it is politically relevant in Colorado, at least. Another reason it "matters" to a lot of people is that this guy is a heavy hitter in the evangelical world, not just some unknown local pastor; as head of the NAE, etc., he's a powerful guy. There have also been reports that he's pretty tight with the White House, has a lot of access to Bush and/or his advisors, so there's that angle too, I guess.

He may have "just" been seeking drugs. But, um, isn't that illegal? And a person buys them again only if he used up the first amount.

If the gay stuff is true, to claim that that means gay marriage should be legal would be like claiming meth should be legal just because he was buying it. Or prostitution.

Because he is a big televangelist, and people are always interested in the moral failures of those who promote morality.

The immoral because it makes them happy, and the moral because they are concerned.

If it doesn't hurt liberalism and people might find it interesting, why would the MSM not report it?

Trying to suppress the "bitter christian" vote in CO.

These tape transcripts were out yesterday. He admits its him on the tapes ordering a RESUPPLY, and he tries this excuse. Oh, and he needs $100-200 worth of meth? That isn't being curious. That is a habit.

You don't wake up one day and say, give me $200 worth of crack please. You get it offered to you, you pay for single doses, then you build up a habit. You don't plunk up as a curious person and say give me $200. It insults our intelligence.

I'm not a very good person because of my sins.

But for crying out loud!

Gay sex and meth?

How does this even happen?

You're probably right, but I'm guessing this tool is leaving out some important modifiers in his little "confession."

Like he didn't use the meth. Perhaps not. Perhaps he gave it to someone else who used it, in exchange for ???

This whole thing stinks on ice.

All this word parsing...didn't we get enough of that a few years back?
