Penalty for unwrapping gifts early: Arrest (12-year old arrested for opening a Christmas gift early)

A mother convinced Rock Hill police to arrest her 12-year-old son after he unwrapped a Christmas present early. The boy's great-grandmother had specifically told him not to open his Nintendo Game Boy Advance, which she had wrapped and placed beneath the Christmas tree, according to a police report.

But on Sunday morning, she found the box of the popular handheld game console unwrapped and opened. When the boy's 27-year-old mother heard about the opened gift, she called police. ...

When the mother threatened to call the police, the boy went into his room and got the Game Boy, the report stated. She called the police anyway.

Two Rock Hill police officers responded to the home and charged the boy with petty larceny. He was charged as a juvenile and released the same day, said police spokesman Lt. Jerry Waldrop, who added the boy was never held at the jail.

"We wouldn't hold a 12-year-old," he said. ...

On Monday night, the mother said she had her son arrested because she didn't know what else to do.

'twould seem there's a bit more to the story

She said the boy likes attention and has a history of bad behavior. He has shoplifted from stores and stolen money from her, she said. The boy has also been inching toward expulsion from school, she added, and even punched a police officer last month. He was arrested for disorderly conduct in that incident.

I know what my mother would have done to me. She would given it to someone else, and I wouldn't have been able to sit down for a day or two.

Without reading the rest of the article, I guessed that she didn't know what else to do because there was no dad anywhere in sight. Then, before posting that thought, I decided to click on the link. And this was the next line:
She had the child when she was 15, the woman said, and has been a single mother struggling to earn a business degree.

The cops should've told that mother to check herself into the nearest nuthouse and then got the heck outta there.

"...the mother said she had her son arrested because she didn't know what else to do."

Ok, I was expecting something like: "I had him arrested to teach him a lesson, or something parental-like." But, "...she didn't know what else to do?????"

May the Gods be merciful on the lunatics that are raising our young.

Arrest the mother for criminal stupidity.

Twenty seven years old with a twelve year old son. Seems you have the stupid part down cold. That's makes her 15 when she got knocked up. Babies raising babies. Couple more years the street will be raising him and the cycle can start all over again.

Her lack of understanding of the proper raising of children is understandable considering she was 15 when her son was born.

But you're right, she seems just plain stupid.

Go ahead and laugh, but it starts with things like Christmas gifts but before you know it, it moves on to more hard core things like birthday, Father’s Day and anniversary gifts.

My mom had this all down.... No names on presents, numbers only... she held the key. Packages were wrapped with Sunday comic paper and again with an outer wrap. Anyone caught peeking at presents would get the wrath of dad. Worked pretty good...
