British Airways yesterday finalized last month's order for four 777-200ERs valued at more than $800 million plus options for four more of the type. BA has said the compatibility of the 777-200ERs, scheduled for delivery in 2009, with the 43 777s in its existing fleet was the key driver behind the order.

Boeing has sold almost 1,000 777's and 1,000 767's. Compare that to Airbus combined sales of A300 series, A330, and A340 aircraft.

Could be closer to the truth, than you'd like to think.

As of the end of 2006:

A300 variants: 604
A310 variants: 362
A330 variants: 772
A340 variants: 499

So Airbus has sold quite respectably over the years.

The A300 had a ten year start on the 767-300, its primary competitor, but the 767 ultimately outsold it.

The A310 outsold the 767-200.

The A330-200 competes size-wise with the 767-400, which only sold a limited number. The A330-200 is the only current Airbus' current wide-body which is selling in significant numbers.

The A330-300 has been successful, but has been outsold significantly by the 777-200ER.

The A340-200 did not sell well, and the A340-300 has been killed by the 777-200ER and Airbus' own A330.

The stretched A340-600, despite a two-year head start over the 777-300ER, has been outsold two to one by the Boeing. Similarly, the ultra long range A340-500, also with a two-year head start, has been outsold two-one by the new 777-200LR.

Airbus has been quite successful, but today they are down to one competitive wide-bodied product, the A330-200. It is great if you need 777-200ER range with a 767-400 capacity. But it is too small for most transpacific routes. The A330-300, which has a similar capacity as the 777-200ER, has a passenger capacity which is well suited to transpacific routes, but lacks the range, and is limited to transatlantic routes.

The trump card is Boeing's 787, which is slots in size-wise against the A330-200, but with the range of the 777-200ER. This has stolen the oxygen from the only wide-body which matters for Airbus.

Airbus just announced a freighter version of the A330-200. But it is well behind Boeing with the 767-300F and 777-200F. Besides, in the size category of the A220-200, there are likely to soon be plenty of A340s available for freight conversions.

I think this conundrum explains Airbus basically giving away A330s an A340s to customers willing to order the A350. They have to keep the production line busy for the next five years until the A350 arrives.
