Some unanswered questions [This Dynamic Earth, USGS]

The tectonic plates do not randomly drift or wander about the Earth's surface; they are driven by definite yet unseen forces. Although scientists can neither precisely describe nor fully understand the forces, most believe that the relatively shallow forces driving the lithospheric plates are coupled with forces originating much deeper in the Earth... Just as a solid metal like steel, when exposed to heat and pressure, can be softened and take different shapes, so too can solid rock in the mantle when subjected to heat and pressure in the Earth's interior over millions of years.

New data shakes accepted models of collisions of the Earth's crust
(press release)
February 7, 2007
New research findings may help refine the accepted models used by earth scientists over the past 30 years to describe the ways in which continents clash to form the Earth's landscape... The "strong and brittle" theory suggests continents break into pieces during collisions of the tectonic plates, pieces of the Earth's crust into which the continents are embedded. The "weak and viscous" theory suggests, on the contrary, that continents thicken and flow upon collision. The data collected by Calais and his team, reported in the Dec. 30 issue of Geophysical Research Letters, suggests the answer is a combination of both theories.

They don’t know what causes earth’s magfield. A geologist once 75 years ago said it is the iron core, and that sounded good so a billion science textbooks have said that ever since.

In economics that was called the “invisible hand.”

“The case against pangea

First… it’s important to understand that this is the most profound disagreement in all of science in a century and a half… and, even so, it is the tip of the iceberg, the ramifications of this disagreement will change everything we know in science, top to bottom...”

EiU, p 146 (and referred to on p 202):
The observation was made on clay fired in kilns by the Etruscans and Greeks. The position of the ancient vases during firing is known. They were fired in a standing position, as the flow of the glaze testifies. The magnetic inclination or the magnetic dip of the iron particles in the fired clay indicates which was the nearest magnetic pole, the south or the north.

In 1896 Giuseppe Folgheraiter began his careful studies of Attic (Greek) and Etruscan vases of various centuries, starting with the eighth century before the present era. His conclusion was that in the eighth century the earth's magnetic field was inverted in Italy and Greece. Italy and Greece were closer to the south than to the north magnetic pole.

P.L. Mercanton of Geneva, studying the pots of the Hallstatt age from Bavaria (about the year -1000) and from the Bronze Age caves in the neighborhood of Lake Neuchatel, came to the conclusion that about the tenth century before the present era the direction of the magnetic field differed only a little from its direction today, and yet his material was of an earlier date than the Greek and Etruscan vases examined by Folgheraiter. But checking on the method and the results from Folgheraiter, Mercanton found them perfect.

An ancient vase found by F.A. Forel in Boiron de Morges, on Lake Geneva, was broken and its pieces were scattered and lay in all directions; when assembled, they all showed one and the same magnetic orientation, which proves again that the magnetic field of the earth was unable to change the orientation originally acquired by the clay when fired and cooled in the kiln.

“All the continents that experience rapid and massive extinctions of animal species (notably the Americas and Siberia) underwent massive changes in their latitudes...

“And coral has been found in Newfoundland, ferns, fossils, coal and fossilized tree-stumps have been found in Antarctica, water lilies and fossilized palm leaves ten and twelve feet long have been found in Spitzbergen, there is evidence that the swamp cypress flourished within 500 miles of the North Pole in the Miocene epoch, and more. The evidence is overwhelming that the Poles have not covered the same parts of the planet for the entire extent of our geological history.

“The consequences of the displacement are monumental. The earth’s crust ripples over its interior and the world is shaken by incredible quakes and floods. They sky appears to fall as continents groan and shift position. Deep in the ocean, earthquakes generate massive tidal waves which crash against the coastlines, flooding them. Some lands shift to warmer climes, while others, propelled into polar zones, suffer the direst of winters. Melting ice caps raise the ocean’s level higher and higher. All living things must adapt, migrate or die ...”

CLAUDE, TX -- A massive crack in the earth opened up last week in Claude, Texas and it's creating a stir among geologists.

Geologists said Tuesday the crack was a joint in the earth's crust. They believe the opening is the result of a weak point in the joint where one spot slips away from the other.

Some parts measure more than 30-feet deep and it drained what used to be a pond. Experts say earth cracks are common but the size of the crack in Claude is not.

Reminds me of this again...
Evolution in Your Face
by Patrick Huyghe
Omni
Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake, is home to more than 300 species of cichlids. These fish, which are popular in aquariums, are deep-bodied and have one nostril, rather than the usual two, on each side of the head. Seismic profiles and cores of the lake taken by a team headed by Thomas C. Johnson of the University of Minnesota, reveal that the lake dried up completely about 12,400 years ago. This means that the rate of speciation of cichlid fishes has been extremely rapid: something on average of one new species every 40 years!

The core samples brought them face to face with the incredible history of Lake Victoria and a discovery that would shatter a world record in the rate of species evolution.

“We broke the pipe apart and saw grass and other evidence to suggest we had actually penetrated through to a soil horizon. It implied that indeed this soil had at some point come into contact with air!” Johnson said. “Grass, however, is not a definite indicator of exposure to air because it can easily be carried by currents out onto the lake where it would sink into the sediment.”

As the team continued the coring technique, they kept finding hard sediment layers and evidence of grass.

“We moved to different sites on the lake and found the same evidence. We took core samples eight times and the same thing came up time and time again,” Johnson said.

By this time Johnson said they could not deny what they discovered on their geological expedition of Lake Victoria. The implications would make news in the world of evolutionary science.

The team didn't have sophisticated testing equipment on the ship to analyze the sediment, so they waited for verification from the samples shipped to the University of Minnesota's Limnological Research Center in Minneapolis. Back in Minnesota, Johnson and his colleagues from the Limnological Research Center, the University of Bergan, Norway, and Materera University, Uganda, found evidence that confirmed their suspicions. They found that Lake Victoria had completely dried out 12,000 years ago.

“We found grassland soil and clay with cracks in it showing that the lake had dried out,” Johnson said, “and there was pollen from cattails just overlying the soil, suggesting a marsh-like setting as the lake basin began to refill.”

“the blue blobs show where colder, denser material is sinking into the mantle.”

“red blobs are warmer plumes of less dense material, rising principally into the ocean-ridge spreading centers. A huge plume seems to be feeding spreading at the East Pacific Rise directly from the core.”

Spacecrafts witness a new facet of Earth's magnetic behaviour
by AUTHOR
March 30, 2006
Five spacecraft from two ESA missions unexpectedly found themselves engulfed by waves of electrical and magnetic energy as they travelled through Earth’s night-time shadow on 5 August 2004... Shortly after 15:34 CEST, something set the tail of Earth’s natural cloak of magnetism oscillating... Whatever it was produced waves that travelled from the centre of the tail to its outer edges... All five spacecraft are designed to collect data on the magnetic bubble surrounding our planet, called the 'magnetosphere'. Earth’s magnetic field is generated deep inside the planet and rises into space where it constantly interacts with the solar wind, a perpetual stream of electrically charged particles released by the Sun. The stream pulls Earth’s magnetic field into a tail that stretches behind the planet for tens of thousands of kilometres. Gusts and storms in the solar wind are known as 'space weather' and can make Earth’s magnetic field quake.
