PHOENIX Officers responding to a report of an exorcism on a young girl found her grandfather choking her and used stun guns to subdue the man, who later died, authorities said Sunday.
The 3-year-old girl and her mother, who was also in the room during the struggle between 49-year-old Ronald Marquez and officers, were hospitalized, police said. Their condition was unavailable.
The relative who called police said an exorcism had also been attempted Thursday.
"The purpose was to release demons from this very young child," Sgt. Joel Tranter said.
Officers arrived at the house Saturday and entered when they heard screaming coming from a bedroom, Tranter said.
A bed had been pushed up against the door; the officers pushed it open a few inches and saw Marquez choking his bloodied granddaughter, who was crying in pain and gasping, Tranter said.

Yesterday’s news. Hispanic family. No Catholic bashing, please. Just a crazy couple who should lose their child.
Some people sure have strange belief systems.
By the way, the last line of the story is a bit weird: “There was no phone listing at Ronald Marquez’s address.” What does that have to do with anything?
Crazy has no particular denomination.
Jesus was quite specific in these matters, that if at first you don't succeed, "much prayer and fasting" is in order. Not choking.
Au contraire.
This sounds neither Catholic or Protestant. Witchcraft, perhaps.
Need pictures to make a final determination, y’know.
Sounds like what that Continental stewardess wanted to do if she could have.
You sure got THAT right!
hahaha!
That does seem strange, but maybe the reporters wanted to call the home and see if anybody there had any comment?
maybe they are implying “see, they were so crazy they didnt even have a phone”
Proper journalism requires that persons central to a story be contacted and offered the chance to be interviewed for their version of events, particularly if the story might leave a “bad impression” of said persons. If the journalist is unable to contact the person or if the person declines the interview then the proper news writing method is to briefly explain why. Typically, a story will end with something like, “As of 5pm today, efforts to contact Mr. Richard Hedd were unsuccessful and numerous messages from Channel69News left on both his home and office answering machines requesting an interview were unreturned.”
I would guess that the reporter of this story is explaining the lack of interview information from that principal person by the fact that there is no phone listed for that address.
Exactly. That line was not there to give readers important detail for the story. It was there so the editor would not ask (demand), "Did you call the family for comment?"
I don’t suppose the kid was named ‘Damian’??
Ping.
“No Catholic bashing, please.”
Not needed, but I do notice all the self crucifixtions around Easter. There are also groups of people “scourging” themselves in order to experiance the “agony of Christ.” Thankfully, it does not seem to happen very often in first world countries though.
Isn’t exorcism still in the Catholic tool box?
“Isnt exorcism still in the Catholic tool box?”
Although I can’t say how true it is, here is an interesting article on the subject.
Excerpt:
“WARNING: Only Catholic priests who are both legally and morally ordained and are faithful to the teachings of Sacred Scripture, as validly understood through the legitimate moral authority of the Church, and who remain spiritually sound should attempt an exorcism. Devils are powerful beings and can be extremely harmful to the unqualified.”
