Here's a photo (on a DVD cover) of Secretariat as a stallion at stud. I think you'll see what I mean that there are echoes of him in your boy's head, especially the expression in their eyes and the set of their heads.

Thank you so much for that picture. I had not seen that one before.

This is nice. I remember atleast reading about all of those horses at one time or another.

If you don’t mind my joining the conversation; I know pano. My shiloh line had it from their sire’s side. The entire litter had it their first year; but all got over it. I took my male, their half brother(same sire in)to look at him. I told the vet I could swear it was pano because it was in the line and that’s what it was. I ended up hip testing him and he showed me the pano. You will usually see pano in the first year of healthy pups; but it goes away. Because of the abuse my male had rec’d through starvation his showed up at age 3; but I have never seen it since.

Good, somebody who has more than one data point!

We were just guessing, have no idea if pano is in Ruby's background or not. It could have been an injury (you know how those crazy Lab pups jump around, and she could easily have twisted something) but the lameness moved from one foreleg to the other and then back again, then it went away. It seemed to be slightly painful (but not enough to keep her from jumping around like an idiot - just enough to make her limp, and whine when you pressed on the bone).

But it went away, and hasn't come back. Which is a good thing.

Sorry, that last post was for you! Don’t know what I was thinking - I guess about Holland, or something!

If she's a reasonably smart horse, she probably figured out that all the temper tantrum did was wear her out, and didn't change a thing!

It's great to have such a steady trainer, hang on to him! I aspire to that kind of patience, don't always succeed. But nothing convinces 'em faster that it's No Use Complaining.

Sounds like she’s making the right choices now. Good to hear, I hope you get some pictures soon!

Sure sounds like pano. Pano is not genetic. LOL, the hard part is keeping her still.

I thought pano tended to run in families.

At least I read that somewhere, I thought.

But it's hard to pin down when you tell the doc, "Well, she was lame YESTERDAY in this leg, but it seems to be all right now . . . " We went through a lot of that, and me trotting her up and down the hall at the vet.

We could not keep her still!

LOL. My vet looked like he didn’t believe me; but when we did his hip tests there was the pano front and center. Atleast; he told me I was right. Don’t misunderstand; I am usually not right.

Pano can run in families; but it’s not genetic. Like autoimmune diseases; they can tend to run in some breeds; but are not genetic. Atleast at this point.

I have a feeling you ain’t going to keep Ruby from doing her thing. LOL And that’s good.

I think when something runs in families but it's not yet genetic, all they mean is they haven't found the marker yet.

They just found the marker for Exercise Induced Collapse at the end of last year, and the test went up on the UMinn website sometime between June (when I last checked) and last week. I've filled out all the forms, and we'll see!

I don't think angels, principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, could keep Ruby from doing her thing! (She is one determined little pup.)

Note to self - I really dislike Photobucket.

Slick is still thinking about things.

Looking good.

Lace is yielding to the bit and softening nicely (ears still thinking but she looks like she's made the decision to cooperate). Deep sand in the arena doesn't hurt!!! You can see that Slick is not as far along, he's tense, but he's not actively protesting! I like the way he's keeping his feet square on the ground and his head down. Looks like he's still finding his new balance with a rider when he's moving.

Got a couple of good looking young 'uns there.

Oh those are great pictures! It’s sure going to help a lot I’d think, for them to have this behind them in selling them.

They’re both good looking babies and even better looking grownups. :~)

Good morning all! I realize I’ve been quiet here, but I’ve been around, just not doing much. We actually have had some unseasonal drizzle the last day or two, I wish it was enough to actually green up the pasture, but I don’t think so.

I am really surprised with the speed at which they are moving, Troy has been working with them for just over a week now. Both very bright horses. Lace got shoes yesterday too for the first time.

I think when he finishes with them or gets to the point where they only need riding time, we'll have him start with Friday and CJ.

We've also been thinking about gelding Sonny and turning him into a trail horse - still don't know for sure what we will do there. I need to get new pictures of Sam and Rocky too so I can get some opinions on them.

We think Lace would be a great youth horse, she's very athletic and yet pretty enough for show. Slick will be able to do about anything - I still see him English or Endurance.

Back East Slick would be at some disadvantage in the hunter show ring because of his color. Although that has changed a good bit in recent years -- seeing more Apps and Paints in the hunter ring, although the bays and chestnuts are still the big winners.

But he is a well put together horse, good topline, nice stride (even with the new sensation of a rider on his back) and handsome head. I could see him as an English horse - wonder what his jumping form will look like. If I saw his canter stride I might have a clue (of course I'm always considering a horse's combined training prospects . . . :-D )

In my experience, showing means open shows leading to breed shows, so it wouldn’t even consider it an issue that he’s an English appaloosa. All of them would be appaloosas ;~)

I think both are nice and well marked, always a plus!

I’ll look forward to more pictures!
