A demo of my Linux installation. My window manager is Compiz Fusion. My virtual machine is run by VirtualBox. Distro is LinuxMint. Video playing is an excerpt from Planet Earth. Recorded with XVidCap.

I burned Puppy 3.01 and gave it a try. I liked the way it was setting up - seems much more user friendly than DSL-N, but everytime I launched the browser, the whole thing would ‘hang’. (Does Linux have the equivalent of Ctl-Alt-Del?). Once it even hung before I got to the browser.

I’ll play with it a little more.

Update - posting from Puppy Linux. I seem to have solved the problem of it hanging. Looks like it was a video issue. I think I’ll keep this one for a while.

No, it's an old PIII desktop that had been gathering dust, together with some older parts from around the house. I decided I needed a second computer, was having problems getting Windows to find the internet, and decided to see what Linux could do to it.

Next step is going to be to see if I can set up the wireless connection for it.

Final update - wireless works like a charm with Puppy. (Something I never could say about Win98). (Just a quick setup after each reboot). Since Puppy’s more user friendly than DSL-N, I think I’m keeping it on my non-XP machine.

The switch to Linux was a lot less painful than I expected - and I didn’t even pay SCO for a license.

LinuxMint is great even on the laptop. I have LinuxMint 3.1 on my laptop with a Mac OS X theme (icon theme, GTK theme, and login window theme) along with Cairo Dock (Mac OS X Dock-like docker that was designed to work with Compiz, Beryl, and Compiz-Fusion). All I have to do is install my modem driver and my wireless drivers (I use ndiswrapper)

Linux Mint is wonderful. Even the XFCE edition - which I use - is top-notch.

I instaled gOS Rocket 2.0 last night and just got done turning it into a multimedia OS. I installed the ubuntu-restricted-extras package, lame, faac, faad, updated Pidgin to 2.3.1, updated GIMP to 2.4.2, installed Audacity and Avidemux and QDVDAuthor and Totem Xine (aka Movie Player) and Wicd (wifi manager), installed a bunch of Mac OS X wallpapers, ndiswrapper, and the Thunar file manager, and installed Remastersys and created my custom gOS installation CD (the ISO is 680 MB). The default gOS installation (only 530 MB) is severely lacking in software, but I managed to get a bunch installed, and now I have my own customized CD. I call it “gOS Ultimate Edition”.

Here’s what my gOS installation looks like. Look in the video description area for links to download the OS.

I did a new version of gOS Ultimate the other night, this time adding more wallpapers to /usr/share/backgrounds, upgrading GIMP to 2.4.4, and replacing xine-ui with totem-xine. I had trouble getting my DVDs to play with Xine, but they play perfectly on Totem Xine. I may upload it next weekend.
