Word For The Day, Thursday, January 10, 2008 - discursive
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 10 January 2008 | secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

discursive \dis-KUR-siv\, adjective
1. Passing from one topic to another; ranging over a wide field; digressive; rambling.
2. Utilizing, marked by, or based on analytical reasoning -- contrasted with intuitive.

Example sentences:
The style is highly discursive, leap-frogging forwards and backwards across the decades, without ever sacrificing thrust or clarity.
-- Nicholas Blincoe, "Spirit that speaks", The Guardian, August 21, 1999

Rather than being a limiting influence, the time restrictions seem often to have compelled ensembles and soloists to condense and distill arrangements and to edit potentially discursive solo performances.
-- Richard M. Sudhalter, Lost Chords

He is in general a discursive politician: Start him talking and you cannot get him to stop.
-- Dan Balz, "President Endures Embarrassing Week", Washington Post, March 15, 1998

Etymology:
Discursive comes from Latin discurrere, "to run in different directions, to run about, to run to and fro," from dis-, "apart, in different directions" + currere, "to run."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

What ever it takes to keep her out of the White House.

Even if old Rushbo has to take one for the team :)

Yes, discursive, boring, aggravating and a bunch of nitwits and blooming idiots on both sides. Debate, ha, it’s going to be a bunch of self important, hot air blowing, jackasses who feeds a gullible public anything - remember the Arpege Perfume ad? “Promise her anything ...” Well, the politicians have taken that as their motto, just modified it to read “Promise them anything and they will vote for me.” Of course it’s the same old discursive rambling, annoying, crap we hear at every election.

Rise and shine!

Honey, I was arisen and ashinin' and outta da house well before 8:48 this morning!!!!!

The annual health department inspection of the kitchen at the Lodge was today. Because we were running a bit late after Bingo last night we went in this morning to really make sure everything was up to snuff.

We passed with flying colors, but the dumb stuff we got called on totally amazed me. The flour and sugar canisters have to be labelled --- mind you, these are clear plastic containers we keep the BAGS of sugar and flour in. A dented can of green beans had to be gone ---- I dropped the can when I was putting it away last week and that is why it was dented.

I so dislike dealing with bureaucrats -- I need a nap!

Good for you, passing the inspection. The kids are out and off to school by 8am every day but today they kept them an extra 30 minutes due to the severe weather which had already blown through by then. I just hope they cancel sports practices and try-outs tonight but I doubt they will. I’ve got a sickly kid I’m trying to get better.
