Tech question - Vista to XP
Me ^ | 1/22/08 | Me

It's become that time again that I need to upgrade my computer. I'm looking at purchasing a Dell Inspiron notebook.

Question is how easy is it to strip Vista off the machine and install XP on to it.

I have the technical know how to do the XP installation and such, and own XP already so that's not an issue.

I guess the real question is do Dell computers using Vista do anything funky with the bios/hard drive partitions that make the upgrade(/heh) to XP from Vista very difficult or impossible?

I work in IT Tech Support on the civilian side.

We tell EVERYONE: strip off Vista and retro-grade to XP SP3.

I have had no feedback on anyone having difficulties in regards to Dell and the retorgrade.

Go through the commercial side, you can still get them with XP.

Shouldn’t be a problem. I’ve done 3 or 4 XP to Vista downgrades on Dell laptops, and it’s just a matter of setting the BIOS to boot from CD\DVD and then nuking the partition to allow for a clean XP installation.

Awesome thanks all.

Ontap: I’m running out of options. I said the same thing about Compaq and HP, no more ever. I’d like to stay with Dell since far as I know they are still mostly a US Company (at least more so then HP/Compaq).

If not Dell/HP/Compaq then whom and stay US as much as possible.

A desktop computer I’d just build from parts myself, but for a notebook that’s kinda out the window.

I went over there and was fiddling with their configurator. Got to the last option:

Select my environmental options

None
Free Recycling Kit - add $0
Support Reforestation: Plant a Tree for Me - add $2 or $1/Month
Recycling Kit and Plant a Tree for Me - add $2 or $1/Month Dell Recommended

/sigh

There an option for burning my old computer down to slag in the forest? I’ll pay extra for that one. :)

My father-in-law and my son have already switched and I’ve heard nothing but good things. The initial expense was more but virtually all the problem I have with this MS/POS are gone. I’ve spent enough on these clones to have bought an Apple. I have friends who own 5 and 6 year old Apples that they just upgrade every once in while. I don’t even remember how many clones I’ve owned the past six years.

I just bought a dell ( 4 days) w/Vista Home Premium
and so far I mostly like it.

I’ve mostly resolved all my older software compatability issues.

I had already read a bunch of tech message boards and online mags re: Vista and hadn’t seen any “showstoppers” to stop me from buying it.

what land mines am I about to step on ?

The two biggest complaints I get are, non-compatability with current industry software; and overuse of system resources for routine tasks.

Vista is like a gas: it will expand to take up the available space.

Purists will point out that it’s trying very hard to emulate a Mac.

Dell continues to sell new PC’s with XP. I understand that Microsoft promises to stop supporting XP some time soon in 2008 but I’m not sure when that will happen with all the Vista problems people have been having. Good Luck.

Many people are living with Vista, just like many people continue to live with cancer.

My question is, what about all that extra weight?
