What happened to Pookie's Toons?
I saw firsthand how he and another FReeper were having issues regarding his copyrighted toons. That FReeper made points that only an insider would know.
Pookie challenged her and she fessed up. She was a Moderator who just happened to be posting as an ordinary FReeper.
As far as I know, he does.
He just will not/can not post his toons as he did before.
I did post a thread re cartoonist Michael Ramirez winning the Pulitzer Prize. Ironically, his cartoons were among several that the mods deleted from my last couple of threads...
For myself, I’m sorry it happened, Pook. Come back to us with your talent when you can...
Thanks, Old Sarge! I miss posting the toons here as well. OTOH, I don’t miss the selectivity, hypocrisy, etc., of some of the mods & others. The mods at the other sites where I post are friendly, helpful, out in the open, etc. Will FReepmail you with more info because I don’t recall if I have already :-(
OOps, I didn’t know I could not put a link to that site. I am sorry.
Gosh I am having a bad typo day....lol
You were violating copyright restrictions forced on Free Republic by the courts. Sorry if you think we violated your freedom of speech but the copyright lawsuit cost FR a huge amount of money. Do you want to pay for the next lawsuit?
Not going to take the bait...you’ll either delete my comments or ban me...
And she hasn't lost her posting privileges? Seems like abuse of power to me.
Nah, well just leave up your comments as the words of someone who fails to grasp the fact that FR fought the good fight and lost over fair-use copyright issues. And that the suit cost a lot of money and effort. And that ever since, many media outlets have directly contacted FR to request limitations on what can be posted here, and a large chunk of the workload for the moderators (with a lot of help from most freepers) is making sure that such restrictions are adhered to in order to prevent a lawsuit that could shut FR down.
Apparently, you also seem to think that the moderators, who are volunteers, are somehow being capricious and arbitrary in their enforcement of those myriad requests, when it took a couple of mods several hours to wallow through one pookie18 threads worth of cartoons to ferret out all those in violation of copyright issues. The only reason it had not been done before is precisely because of the effort level and that the mods had not realized just how many of the cartoons you posted were in violation of the requests from media outlets - such as IBD not allowing FR to post Ramirez cartoons.
And that is the problem - you were exposing FR to any number of potential lawsuits. You are free to determine which cartoons are allowed to be legally posted on FR and post those. Oh, thats a lot of work! Just dump it on the mods! And blame them for protecting FR from lawsuits!
Nope. I just checked.
She is still FReeping away. And still kicking butt on others.
Yeah, heaven forbid mods ever post under their own screen names and state the obvious (or what should be obvious) regarding copyright restrictions.
And putting in a lot of volunteer hours helping keep FR legal and in adherence to JimRob's guidelines.
Why so defensive? Can’t people here have a simple conversation without the mods butting in and flooding the lousy thread with repetitive comments? Someone simply asked where Pookie’s Toons was. The next thing you know the thread is hijacked by the mods to justify their actions. Can we just stop this nonsense already? Leave it be.
We'll keep repeating the core issue here - copyright restrictions and the legal problem posters who flaunt such represent to the health of FR - as long as it takes for certain persons to finally get the point.
Or maybe you just want to bash the volunteer FR mods without us having the opportunity to present our side of the story. Well, there are plenty of places for that.
So tell us, then - what would you do with a poster who refused to adhere to copyright restrictions? And who made a big stink over moderator requests that they do adhere to such?
We did not ban anyone. We simply took the necessary steps to protect FR from legal jeopardy. And for that, we get a raft of nonsense. For doing a volunteer job.
I get it, the Freepathon is just to keep you guys in Beer and Pizza.
Really, It's a thankless job.
Except the beermeister in the mod lounge is busted and the pizza delivery guy never shows up because it's in a seedy neighborhood.
Other than that, the bennies are great.
What is the mod's name that you keep referring to? You're throwing mud at someone who can't defend themself because none of the mods know who in the heck you're talking about.
All the mods have been freeping for years and we are allowed to freep using our own names. Being a mod does not mean we can't freep and when we do freep, we're not trying to fool anyone. We've all been freepers much longer than we've been mods.
Look at the inflammatory posts she had with Pookie last month. And when she was outed as a Moderator, she backed off.
I found that questionable.
What bashing? And are you intimating a threat to me?
You begging for a ZOT or what?
No threat - just saying there are plenty of places on the Internet where folks can rip into the FR moderators without having them respond back.
But FR is not one of those places, for some strange reason.
I’m not a Dude, and I’ve been a member and donor to FR since 1997. This thread didn’t need to be taken in this direction, but it was...by the mods.
I don’t really know Pookie or the fight in question but speaking as someone who got a one year ban (thus I doubt anyone would confuse me with a moderator).
I think you’re reply was quite reasonable and explained to me precisely FR’s position.
Check out the new headline.
Pimping it good, eh?
Pookie’s Toons? (LIVE THREAD! The martyrdom saga continues.)
Title change is a classic!
There is a fair amount of what moderators do that is a judgement call. Is a post a personal attack? Was it provoked? Is a comment racist or just non-PC?
But copyright and excerpt issues do not fall into that category. They are black and white. For posters to get after the moderators for enforcing requests from media sources regarding what is allowed on FR is wrongheaded. To complain about a mod posting under their real screen name to back up what should be blatantly obvious about copyright restrictions is wrongheaded as well. But apparently a few people seem to think that FR should flaunt excerpt requests. If they want to pony up the legal fees up front, hey, go for it. Until then, the FR policy stands. And for damn good reason.
Ok, thanks for clarifying that. But I have a question. Why do the mods feel it necessary to even comment in a thread like this? The job is to moderate right? Not get involved in the discussions taking place? I didn't feel that the comments made on this thread were of the nature that would require the mods to take notice.
Who changed the headline? The mods?
And the mods GREATLY appreciate posters who mash abuse to help prevent lawsuits - such as finding that Getty image in reply 1,145. That exceeds the attention span of the average sidebar moderator by 1,140 posts.
They’re the only ones who can, so.....
There was a lot of gnashing of teeth and caterwauling over this issue. Some people tried to claim it was personal or capricious or arbitrary. It was not. This is about pure legal CYA for FR. And quite frankly, the mods are puzzled that a few people (not you) are having trouble with that underlying concept.
A little bit of hypocrisy I’d say.
More like a case of someone (who wasn't even involved in the previous episode) calling it like it is.
(Yet another Mod dips a finger in this one. I'm sure I'll regret it.) Who else could have answered that perfectly reasonable question? Being mysterious about this would serve nobody's interests, not Pookie's, not anyone on FR. So one of us explained the issue. I'm sorry if that alarms anyone but it's the most reasonable approach, I think.
The issue is copyright violations. It can turn FR dark, it really can.
Hey, they’ve got an axe to grind against Pookie. And they hold the power to hijack threads by changing headlines, so....
Remember the Golden Rule.
Wrong. It's called abusing the power of the position. Pretty pathetic.
Axe to grind? Asking that Pookie not jeopardize FR by posting many cartoons that violate FR excerpt guidelines is an axe to grind? And then countering claims by some that the moderating in question is somehow arbitrary and capricous is an axe to grind?
This is not a judgement call. This is legal black and white. This is serious stuff that could shut FR down.
Maybe that's what you'd like to see. That's about the only logical reason I can see why someone would take your position here. If you give a damn about the legal health of FR, it is illogical to back deliberate copyright violations.
Remember the Golden Rule.
Except that we don't have any gold - we get no pay. We just put in several hours a week because we give a damn about this site.
It’s sad. In one short thread and headline, I’ve lost all respect for the mods. They’ve shown themselves to be very petty.
Oh, spare me the sanctimonious spew. Given that pookie18 is basically demanding the right to put FR in continuous legal jeopardy by posting any damn restricted cartoon that pookie pleases, I'd say a bit of ridicule present in a headline change is pretty mild sanction.
Oh, that's gonna keep me up all night...
Listen. Pookie lost. He took his toons elsewhere. Yet you see fit to post a snarky headline as if to boast about your triumphs?
I’ve never stated here or anywhere that you were wrong to make your position. I agree with you, OK. But the headline change is petty and tacky.
And my point about the Golden Rule? Let’s just say that you make the rules here, and this headline is proof of your power.
