Back in The Day

Back in the day …
We’d pile the boys in back,
And drive down the road to the crossing,
Where Farmer George’s field was laying fallow,

For about the fourteenth year,
And the ruts between the bases,
Looked like plow marks,
Made by boots and by bare feet,

Of well-tanned lads in overalls,
And little else but grins and freckles.

Back in the day …
We’d stop beside the creek after the ball game,
And swing out for a drop into the coolness,
Of a shaded depth of water, too lazy in the summer,

To go out into the sunny parts downstream,
Where work was to be done,
In turning wheels to grind our well-earned grain,
For making bread to sop up the real food,

Of meat that went unwillingly to Heaven,
Protesting in its innocence and fear.

Back in the day …
That lasted near a week of sunny hours,
From the morning light that wound the rooster,
To the last gray dusk that showed the bats the way,

To dust away the wisps of cloudy cobwebs,
That kept the stars from shining bright,
In nights that settled into peaceful silence,
With only pops and fizzles from the fire,

Left banked to sleep until the morning,
When biscuits needed waking for the day,

Back in the day ...

I Love My Dentist

My friends and I appreciate
Our dentist, Doctor Maik M. Strait.
He stands there with his knowing stare
Each time we crawl into his chair.

He cleans our teeth with special goo.
Why, he even cleans the back sides, too.
Then he gives us special tips
On how to brush inside our lips.

Oh! Cavities! When he finds one,
He grabs the phone! Dials 911!
Crowds line the streets so they can see
A cavity emergency.

If there's one thing I must keep still
It's Dr. Strait's annoying drill.
To keep it quiet there is one way,
Just floss and brush teeth every day!

So we admire our Doctor Strait.
Yes, even when he makes us wait.
Without these dentists we might be,
A gummy toothless society.

They tell me ice cream junkies are all the same
All the soda jerkers know my name

LOL Glad it’s you and not me! If I lived there, I’d never leave the house!

I’ll take the brownies! We were talking today with a customer that lost 90 lbs. Don’t know where he carried it, he’s about 6’ 10” and skinny as a rail. He said he just quit eating sugar and white things. I remarked—open mouth, insert foot—that I didn’t eat any sugar, and it didn’t seem to make any difference.

They all turned and looked at me, as one they said— chocolate!

Guilty! But it’s still not white!
