I’ve been keeping up with this on Jeff Masters’ weather underground blog. This is a Cape Verde storm and that is the significance. The CV storms usually don’t start cranking out until August.

I think they’re splitting hairs on a lot of the “historical” information. It actually doesn’t go back that far before the advent of global radar.
