Alright, that's it, I can't take it anymore. Maybe it's this whole election cycle or that I can't take any more of the Democrat convention, but it's time...you thought it would never come didn't you?
Forgive me for interrupting the current Messiah revival going on at Incestco Field at Pile High, we have actual college football games going on. Yes, tonight. Right now, this very day...
...Well, dont just stand there, go order some pizza or maybe find a box of Franzia or something the college football season is here!! Youre in preseason form here shame, shame shame.
Okay, lets get to the opening slate of games starting with tonight
#23 Wake Forest at Baylor (8:00 pm). I think this is the biggest matchup in Waco since Janet Reno brought in the ATF to defeat the Branch Davidians.
North Carolina State at South Carolina (8:00 pm, ESPN Regular). These are always fun little nonconference games that kind of get you by before conference play really gets going. Steve Spurrier and possibly Erin Andrews are involved, its what DVRs are made for!
(for our UConn Huskies Biggirl and Man50D)Hofstra at Connecticut (7:30 pm) I know absolutely nothing about Hofstra, and Im not about to pretend as though I do. Actually, that isnt true, former New York Jets WR Wayne Chrebet played for Hofstra. But Id start freebasing something very nasty if the Huskies were to not get victory #1 tonight.
Youngstown State vs. #2 Ohio State (High Noon, the Big 10 Network). The Penguins are a national power in the Football Championship Subdivision alright, Im sick of this, we were getting along just fine with I-A and I-AA, but oh no, we had to change it to football bowl subdivision and football championship subdivision. Could you imagine instead of calling Ron Jeremy a chipmunk you called him body hair proficient? But anyway, guess who has the highest win percentage in Youngstown State football history? If you guessed Jim Tressel, youre not only right, you probably cheated and looked it up---well if you arent from the state of Ohio.
Akron at #13 Wisconsin (High Noon, the Big 10 Network). For those of you who think Im rubbing it in with mentioning that the vast majority of Big 10 fans probably cant even see their Badgers or Buckeyes or Illini and so on well, I am. And for that I apologize. I am really curious about the Badgers this year they seem to me like a wild card candidate in the Big 10 this year. Maybe Im wrong, but
#17 Virginia Tech vs. East Carolina (at Charlotte, NC) (High Noon, ESPN Regular). Hey, any of you remember when East Carolina was on ESPN all of the time in the early 90s? I never understood why then I realized that the Pirates went 11-1 back in 1991 and theyve had a few other solid years during the decade. Shows what I remember.
Coastal Carolina at #22 Penn State (High Noon, Big 10 Network). JoePa has won 372 games, some national titles, and has some things in State College, PA named after him, but hes never beaten Coastal Carolina! (Yeah, hes also never played against Coastal Carolina but you all want the whole specific truth, dont ya?) Coastal Carolina likes to be called the Chanticleers, which is basically a rooster. If I were to say that the Chanticleers had a chance Id sound kind of cocky.
(Thank you, Ill be here all week.)
Bowling Green at #25 Pittsburgh (High Noon, ESPNU). Oh, the temptation here to gloat about the 2005 Fiesta Bowl. Its right there and here I have to behave like one of those great imaginary moderates in political history. But should the Panthers win the Big East this year itll be much more how should I put this?...competitive?
Georgia Southern vs. #1 Georgia (12:30 pm). Obviously this is a warm up game, the first of two before the Dawgs take on South Carolina in two weeks, but if last year is any indication, you never really can tell.
Hawaii at #5 Florida (12:30 pm). Id like to thank the Hawaii Rainbows/Warriors for making complete Bidens of yourselves and setting back the lost cause of non-BCS schools at least 4 or 5 years over the course of last season. And now the Gators will get to toss you around like a well-worn prison inmate.
#3 USC at Virginia (3:30 pm, ABC and/or ESPN2). A lot of Pac-10 schools like to play road games like this, its just not all of them happen to be USC. It kind of reminds me while I was at a tailgate and I had the idea of having USC barnstorm throughout the Ivy League kicking the living snot out of all the Ivy League institutions on their home fields. Sure enough I played this whole thing out on a friend's XBox while tailgating. Call it Revenge of the Jocks
Villanova at #8 West Virginia. (3:30 pm). From what little Ive read on the Mountaineers this year, theyll still be a powerful force on offense. That should get them by for now.
Appalachian State vs. #7 LSU (5:00 pm, ESPN Regular) The FCS and BCS/FBS national champions together in the same game? Say what you will about one Les Miles, but even he cant be susceptible to a I-AA ambush right?
Northern Iowa vs. #16 ah, do I have to?
(yes, you have to!)
But I really dont want to, its like you all hate me.
(just quit being a baby and get it over with!)
Fine #16 BYU. Blechhh. Now Im going to wash my mouth with Listerine. Yeah, the Parochial Stench really shouldnt be ranked this high. Not that Northern Iowa will prove that to be wrong, but hey, we can always hold out hope. Top 25 is probably deserved, but not 16th. Thats just ridiculous.
Alright, this is really a preseason kind of week, and now Im just irritated. I mean who just goes around ranking BYU that high? Lets get to the blowout games while Im at it:
Wouldnt you know it, theres even a few rivalry games this weekend:
Washington at #21 Oregon (10:00 pm). The Ducks want to rebound from losing Dennis Dixon and in turn crushing their national title hopes last season and the Huskies are hoping Jake Locker can bring them back to at least being more respectable than they have been the past few years. That and both Oregon and Washington just have so much in common
Kentucky at Louisville (Sunday 3:30 pm, ESPN Regular). Last years game for the Governors Cup might have been one of the more underrated games of the entire season. That and UK needs to have some kind of ceremonial play for Jared Lorenzen always liked him.
Colorado State vs. Colorado (in Denver, Sunday 7:30 pm). The Rams were downright terrible for most of last season. The Buffs are just about on their way back to being a competitive team again. All this is provided that by the time this post hits the bandwith that much of downtown Denver doesnt all of the sudden ascend into the heavens along with the Messiah himself. Then I guess the two teams would have to play at Coors Field or in the parking lot of the Cherry Creek Mall or something.
And now, the marquee games:
#24 Alabama vs #9 Clemson (in Atlanta 8:00 pm, ABC). This is a good measuring stick for both teams. For the Tide to see if Nick Saban is righting the ship in Tuscaloosa, and for the Tigers, it really could be the start of a magical year. Maybe the Bama fans can help us out here, but were I a Bama fan I dont think Id have much confidence in John Parker Wilson. Maybe thats just me though.
#20 Illinois vs. #6 Missouri (in St. Louis, 8:30 pm, ESPN Regular). I like this game, and these are two schools that ought to play each other every year, sort of like a Cubs/Cardinals of college football. Im also glad I didnt make any predictions like I did last year because I probably would have picked Mizzou QB Chase Daniel to win it this year and then Id just feel like a big dope.
#18 Tennessee at UCLA (Labor Day, 8:00 pm, ESPN Regular). Strange as it may seem, these two schools have actually played each other 13 times. (The last time they played the Vols had some kid of Archie Mannings playing for them. Boy I bet thats a sore pill for the Ole Miss faithful to swallow losing that recruiting battle).
Anyway, enjoy your games this weekend and go forth and increase your carbon footprint.
Hmmm I see your point.
Anyways the second half has been rough, Ganz has thrown a couple of interceptions and WMU has lit up the secondary, but they still can’t run on us.
Brewster will have Minnesota in good shape by the end of this year I think, he is still instilling his players and he is a good recruiter.
Back in the day Jamal was a very underutilized RB when we had Ron McBride as our HC. It was the damndest thing, we had a potential All-American RB in our backfield an McBride just refused to use him.
But Jamal is a Ute through and through. That makes me smile. :)
We do have a solid team, we’re simply a pessimistic fan base for a whole host of reasons. We get UNLV next week, hopefully we won’t have a let down.
Gophers managed to make it close. The squib kickoff goes out of bounds! %&*$%#@*#! NIU gets the ball on the 40. Two short passes get it to the 20 with 8 seconds left. The secondary had to knock down two end-zone passes to seal the win.
Look, my Mom has had an itch to post on the NASCAR threads, don’t tempt the woman! ;)
Well the final was 41-24 Nebraska but I think Pelini is going to have a brain hemorrhage when he chews out the team for giving up 341 yards in the air.
So I fell asleep at some point, only to wake up and find out that USC basically manhandled us, 52-7. The last game I have seen that was that bad is last year's VT vs. William & Mary's 44-3.
Don't worry; you will enjoy beating the hell out of us after Thanksgiving. ;)
Cheers and good luck in your remaining years from a fellow Freeper (in his last year at UVA E-School).
You missed Texas A&M
I’m still in some kind of amazed shock right now...I mean this is MY Utah Runnin’ Utes, this just doesn’t happen to us.
Hey, Pitt and VPISU were ranked.
But here’s one to warm at least a few hearts: perennial punching bag Duke is up by 24 with 12 minutes to go. (My Minnesota Gophers got their former coach Ted Roof as our defensive coordinator this year. He made our D just good enough to eke out a win tonight.)
Bama looking tough. I hope they lose that mojo on the “Third Saturday in October”! :^)
I am a member of huskers illustrated and huskers.com so I am up on it! The funny thing is that I am an alumni of Arizona State.
Ganz’s reply to the question “What did Coach Pelini say in the locker room?” was funny: “Well, I can’t repeat a lot of it, but . . .” I liked his affirmation of Pelini: “He’s my kind of coach.”
A graduate of an eastern university is known as an alumnus or an alumna.
Hey, I'm the only one allowed to have staff on this site! Plurality will kill FR! ;)
Lol, the upperclassmen have already informed all of us that UVA is a school for “rich kids” and “snobs”. One of them even shook my hand when I told them that UVA rejected me. But of course, FReepers are generally not snobs.
Our next game is against Georgia Tech and it’s a home game so everyone in the Corps is starting to get fired-up and motivated.
You had to throw in the whole “49er” in to your username didn’t you minor49er? ;)
(Actually as an Oakland Raiders fan we’re the working class and less elitist of the SF Bay Area, so when we see “49ers” we see “ah, not these #$#$#@ again?!?!”)
However, as the keeper and starter of the college football ping list, thank you for stopping by minor49er.
81-yard TD run by a Cal running back (after Mich. St. had closed to 31-24). Now 38-24 with 4:21 to go.
Congrats on your big win at Clemson. :^)
D’oh, same here. I wasn’t thinking when I put alumni, it is alumnus or alumna here as well. That’s my ASU education showing.
Well, there is some truth to that part.
That said, I am not rich by any means, and I try not to be a snob, though occasionally I am, but that's largely due to my being here for way too long.
By “snob” I normally surmise that one would be a Dim, so I think by posting here alone you’d be alright. ;)
The Oregon Ducks has the game all locked up.
yeah, and I hope Willingham is fired by the Oklahoma game....
You want to talk upsets, talk to the Pittsburg or Virginia Tech fans. My Wolverines will be back at the top of the polls before you know it.
Do you get the Big Ten network N-S?
Yes! God is good.
Oops. How’d that happen?
I notice yesterday that I get it too which made my day.
I’m a long time Michigan fan and a alumni of Illinois and Northwestern, so I went 1 for 3 yesterday. Though my Illini gave Mizzou all that they could handle. Just like last year.
Duke officials were a bit surprised when, at 6 p.m. EDT on Saturday, about an hour before the scheduled kickoff of their game against James Madison, two men parachuted into Wallace Wade Stadium and landed at the 35-yard line with a game ball.
Problem was, the Blue Devils who were warming up on the field along with their guests from Virginia werent expecting it.
All we know is, they must have missed their jump site, a team official said.
And they did because the jump site was meant to be about eight miles away.
North Carolina was scheduled to receive the game ball for its contest against McNeese State via an aerial team at about that time in Chapel Hill.
According to UNC assistant athletic director for promotions Michael Beale, the plane was in the air, but the jumpers from Virginia-based Aerial Adventures opted to cancel the leap into Kenan Stadium because of a severe weather front which would later delay both games.
Evidently, when the clouds eventually opened, the pilot thought they were over the correct stadium, and the skydivers jumped realizing only when they landed in Wallace Wade that they were in the wrong place.
The two men immediately scrambled off the field with the game ball, and when UNC associate athletic director Rick Steinbacher was informed by a reporter of what had happened, he immediately called Duke officials to confirm the miscue, and offer his apologies.
In about five years, maybe this will be funny, Steinbacher said. Right now, Im just glad no one was hurt.
And War Eagle !!!
Thought you would get a kick outa that...
Hey! Hey! Hey! What the hell?!
I don’t see you featuring the Minnesota-Northern Illinois game?
Have you no sense of priorities? :)
Okay its 1:30pm here in the Wild Wild West and I have a splitting headache. Since it is a holiday weekend, we have two games today, rivalry games even:
Louisville/Kentucky, right now on ESPN
Colorado/Colorado State on FSN.
what kind of wine did you get? Thunderbird?
I’ve never understood why Kentucky/Louisville, colorado/Colorado State and Iowa/Iowa State have their rivalry games so early in the year.
Most other teams wait ‘til the end of the season to hold theirs.
Well, my brother’s fiancee is in town and she makes wine. (She’s from Wisconsin, so I was surprised it wasn’t beer). So I had some merlot on top of the pitcher(s) of PBR I had during the game. I always seem to have worse hangover from draft beer, even though I like draft beer. :)
See, I have a dilemma in featuring Big 10 games this year, because there are some Big 10 fans who can’t get the Big 10 Network. So if I feature them, and mention The BTN, I fear that I’ll get a “BTN?!?! Way to rub it in you SOB!!” So I’m damned if I do and I’m damned if I don’t.
I have a hangover just from watching the Huskies! Good grief.
I think it’s tradition more than anything. Texas/OU for example is during the Texas State Fair every year right in the middle of the season.
Don't rub it in.
Virginia is holding classes tomorrow.
You’re kidding?!?!?! That’s almost unheard of for classes to be held on Labor Day. Ouch.
I wish I was.
Thats almost unheard of for classes to be held on Labor Day. Ouch.
Now do you understand why I spent yesterday doing homework? I have two classes and homework due tomorrow, with more on Tuesday.
