Me too, Dita! And the year I was born, it fell on Easter Sunday. It has fallen on Easter 4 or 5 times through the years. My dad’s birthday was the day before and he wanted me to come so bad that day as the story goes. He always told me I didn’t arrive until the next day because I was stubborn. I think he just loved telling that story. He was a precious sweetheart of a man and father.

Gee Bee, Well, I went to the market with every intention of buying a turkey breast. The cheapest one was $16.00. So, I went to the freezer to check on whole turkeys - and found one for $4.50. Guess which one I bought? Anybody here like dark meat?

It’s very delicious, and nutritious, too. Somewhat. Smirk. Very easy to fix and it looks so elegant. It’s just like making a jellyroll.

Pumpkin Roll

4 eggs
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1/2 cup flour
1/2 can of pumpkin—small can
Mix all together and pour into greased jellyroll pan. 15x10x1 Bake at 375 for @ 15 mins. Dust kitchen towel liberally with conf. sugar. Turn cake out onto kitchen towel, roll up from the short end. Leave it until cool.

Filling
3 oz cream cheese, softened
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups conf. sugar

Mix together. Unroll cake and spread filling evenly. I leave about an inch clear around the edges. Roll the cake back up. This is much better if you make it a day ahead and refrigerate overnight!

This is always a great hit, but I usually only make it once or twice a year. It is rich. Some people separate the eggs/egg whites. Seems like a lot of trouble to me. I like it thick—it’s more like pumpkin pie that way. Enjoy!

Since the recipe calls for odd amounts of pumpkin and cream cheese, I usually make two at a time—one for us and one for someone else!

I Meant To Do My Work Today

I meant to do my work today,
But a brown bird sang in the apple tree,
And a butterfly flitted across the field,
And all the leaves were calling me.

And the wind went sighing over the land,
Tossing the grasses to and fro,
And a rainbow held out its shining hand--
So what could I do but laugh and go?

Hi, Gee Bee! Well, I lied. Not that I intended to, mind you. I went to the market to buy a turkey breast - and the least expensive one was $16.00! So, I went to the freezer section where whole turkeys were on display. I ended up buying a ten pound turkey for $4.50! (And, I’ll make soup out of the dark meat!)

Then, pecan pies and minced meat pies were on sale for $4.99 each. Now, pecans, and minced meat in a jar would cost WAY over that, so I bought them, and with the $10.00 coupon (that I cut out of the paper), I got them for FREE!

I’ll go to sleep with a smile tonight - I just love a good buy!

Bear In There

by Shel Silverstein

>

There's a Polar Bear
In our Frigidaire—
He likes it ‘cause it's cold in there.
With his seat in the meat
And his face in the fish
And his big hairy paws
In the buttery dish,
He's nibbling the noodles,
He's munching the rice,
He's slurping the soda,
He's licking the ice.
And he lets out a roar
If you open the door.
And it gives me a scare
To know he's in there—
That Polary Bear
In our Fridgitydaire.

There’s a certain young lady,
Who's just in her heyday,
And full of all mischief, I ween;
So teasing! so pleasing!
Capricious! delicious!
And you know very well whom I mean.

With an eye dark as night,
Yet than noonday more bright,
Was ever a black eye so keen?
It can thrill with a glance,
With a beam can entrance,
And you know very well whom I mean.

With a stately step — such as
You'd expect in a duchess —
And a brow might distinguish a queen,
With a mighty proud air,
That says “touch me who dare,”
And you know very well whom I mean.

With a toss of the head
That strikes one quite dead,
But a smile to revive one again;
That toss so appalling!
That smile so enthralling!
And you know very well whom I mean.

Confound her! devil take her! —
A cruel heart-breaker —
But hold! see that smile so serene.
God love her! God bless her!
May nothing distress her!
You know very well whom I mean.

Heaven help the adorer
Who happens to bore her,
The lover who wakens her spleen;
But too blest for a sinner
Is he who shall win her,
And you know very well whom I mean.

-- Washington Irving (1783-1859)

Lucky gurl!

I hate Mondays for one main reason. It is trash day. I have (as you know) a very long driveway, and the trash has to be in the container outside the gate before 8am. (If I put it in the recepticle before Monday, the deer, javelina and who knows what else - dumps it over, looking for goodies left over from “Yorkie’s Kitchen”!)

It's Dark in Here

  I am writing these poems
From inside a lion,
And it's rather dark in here.
So please excuse the handwriting
Which may not be too clear.
But this afternoon by the lion's cage
I'm afraid I got too near.
And I'm writing these lines
From inside a lion,
And it's rather dark in here.

Well, I keep the bags of trash locked in the garage until Monday morning (for safe keeping). Then I load it into the van, drive it down to the gate, and then take the container outside the gate, and empty my bags into it. It is a major grumpy morning - every Monday, here!

My friend is doing very well - in fact, in just two weeks, it will be six months since her surgery. She still uses a cane, and walks very slow, but, thank God, she now uses the “Big Girl Potty”!

I’m so sorry I messed up the link to Dolly’s song, but I see that jaycee has given you the post where I corrected it. Hope you got to listen to it. It’s very upbeat - I’m not crazy about a lot of Dolly’s songs, but there are a few I really like. This one, and “I Will Always Love You”, and her version of “I’ll be Home for Chirstmas” is just so pretty.

The Age of Unbelieveing

We’ve come to an Age of Unbelieving
Where all the magic’s gone out of the world
No more do the Good Folk
Dance in the Hollow Hills
No more the banshee’s song
Echoes lamentatious trills…

All thanks to that fiend Newton
And that dreadful man Voltaire
The Headless Horseman no longer rides-
All Dragons have retreated to their lairs.

In the day and age of Ipods
Of hybrid SUV’s
Of computer graphic systems
With Intel Celeron D
Hi-tech toys every Christmas
Outdated as they’re new
We are lost in an Age of Unbelieving
If things aren’t tangible they can’t be true!
