Until various factions of conservatism realize and accept that there are many meanings of the word conservatism, there will be no party rebuilding (Republican or other parties). They will simply blame each other and claim that their ideas are the ‘pure’ conservatism, while others are not.

That's what a "walk in the wilderness" is all about.

Looks like this one may be a long one.

52-46.

The only people around here stabbing conservatives in the back are the RINOs. Even giving Libertarians 2% of the vote—a stretch, according to the anti-Libertarians around here—guess what? MCQUEEG lost this one because of Bush and because of a porkbarreling Republican congressional delegation. Not libertarians.

One would think one would beware PUMAs bearing gifts long before criticizing our conservative cousins, our long time allies.

The mentality that mistrusts libertarians while colluding with Hitlery’s troops is what left so many flat-footed last evening.

I recommend a reality check, and as soon as possible.

Libertarians have nothing to do with anything. You are losers for winning. Everyone and everything is wrong. You are arrogant, self-righteous and irrelevant elite snobs who are accountable to nothing but empirical principles known only to yourselves. Who needs you?

Republicans pretty much have nothing to do with anything either this morning.

We can all fight with each other while wishing for limited government and have a good time.....but it will mean nothing because neither are in power. Enjoy.

Which shows the stupidy of blind ideology. He withdrew his candidacy, and people still voted for him, and affected nothing. Paul had good ideas, but he is completely unable to translate those ideas into a format with broad general appeal.

As Reagan put it, "Most men move to the center, great men move the center". Or at least, words to that effect. I don't have time to look up the exact quote.

The center has been moved. Leftward. Big time. Of all the GOP candidates for POTUS, there was maybe a full fluid ounce of charisma between them. It wasn't until Palin was injected into the McCain campaign that I saw a glimmer of hope.

At best, the next 4 years will be a sharp slap to the face of the morons who voted themselves bread and circus'. At worst... well... Picture a boot stomping on a human face... Forever.

Maybe so. But limited government isn’t even on the menu anymore. We’re Big Government lovers all the way. Perhaps different flavors of Big, but Big nonetheless.

What, specifically, is unconservative about libertarianism?
I’d like details. I find them very appealing since the Republican party deserted me.

Yes. Lets chase those filthy Libertarians away from the Republican party. Its big, and successful enough without their conservatism weighing it down.

Dems blame Bush for everything. Lets be even more just like them and blame Libertarians.

I hate them sooo much!!

Libertarian votes cost McCain the election in many states

If you are right then it would have been a much better idea to embrace the Libertarians and make them a part of the Republican coalition instead of chasing them away. It is more logical and likely to build a winning coalition with them, than for example, union members, or one of the other groups that didn't vote for the Republican candidates.

McCain just proved that trying to get "moderates" to vote for you is a losing plan - "moderates" are just liberals pretending not to be.

I thought conservatives were about getting the government back to its proper constitutional role? Apparently that is not the case for some.

Libertarian votes cost McCain the election in many states. Look at how many votes Barr took away from McCain and I think you’ll see where our victory went. Barr was nothing more than Ross Perot for the 2008 election.

Nominate a Reagan who these people can vote for...don't complain at them when you nominate a RINO they can't vote for.

After he and all the Republicans expanded the socialized health care. They call it the prescription drug plan. Remember that?

That was part of the problem: To many sat back because the person they supported in the primaries didn’t get the nomination. McCain wasn’t my first choice or even my second, but he was a hell of a lot better than obama

That's a crock. Complete B.S. Nader got more votes than Barr did.

The fact is that McCain would have won this election if he had stood up and opposed the bailout like 80% of Americans wanted.

But he couldn't.

THAT is why he is not the President-elect this morning.

Nominate someone who is with the people, like Reagan, and you will win.

After, when he started up on the Joe the Plumber/socialism routine. He finally got on message, but the country didn't want to buy what he was selling, unfortunately.

Boortz has some choice words on this today:

WHERE DO REPUBLICANS GO FROM HERE

What is clear is that the Republican Party has failed on so many levels. I'm not talking about John McCain, I'm talking about the Republican Party. A party that was supposed to reflect the Conservative values of limited government, fiscal restraint, among others, got completely drunk with power. Our Founding Fathers would be ashamed.

Republicans also failed to communicate a message that people could understand. Only in the last days, when Joe the Plumber arrived, did a light bulb flicker. But it shouldn't have taken one man in Ohio to do it. John McCain should have spent months hammering Obama's Marxist tendencies -- his 95% tax cut lies -- his cutting capital gains for small businesses. As a party Republicans failed to rally a base that reflected its core values. Maybe that is because those core values no longer exist for the Republicans in power. Just take a look at the past eight years. But somehow, before the next election, they must figure out which direction they want to take their party, and they must believe it, market it, and most importantly – live up to it.

If the Republicans don't learn from this, that is their own fault. They created Barack Obama. They created a Congressional Democrat majority. But they also have the power to re-create their party. Some pundits are worried that this "new direction" will be more socially Conservative. Perhaps that's exactly what we need! My preference would be to see a move back to basic principles of individualism, freedom, economic liberty, self sufficiency and pride in our Country ... with a highlight on individualism. Barack Obama is merely a continuation of the leftist war against the concept of the individual. Democrats look at us as tools ... tools to be used to create some sort of an egalitarian society. Can the Republicans make this point to the voters? Hint: Republicans need to look to the Libertarian Party for some ideas on how to promote the idea of individualism and fight the concept of the individual as government property.
