Mammoths wiped out by 'perfect storm?'
Discovery ^ | Jan. 2, 2009 | Michael Reilly

Mammoths were a hearty group of giants that went extinct not because of climate change or overhunting by early humans, but a "perfect storm" of conditions, according to new research.

At the height of their numbers, the elephant-like beasts roamed the northern hemisphere from France to Canada, north above the Arctic circle and south into China.

The “media” drives me crazy with these “chic” terms that they come up with. For a while there, they couldn’t say “gone missing” enough. Even the braindead idiots on the cop shows were using it in every other line. Now, everything is “the perfect storm.” Oy!

It’s also been noted that unlike elephants, mammoths had a genetic peculiarity—they were almost identical. They had only two major subsets in the world, and somehow managed to avoid diversification.

It strongly implies both that they were very nomadic and would cross long distances to mate outside of their group. It also means that what killed one group happened throughout the northern hemisphere. Most commonly this would be a chronic disease.
