Word For The Day, Wednesday, January 21, 2009 - palatable
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 01/21/2009 | The Janitor

Posted on 01/21/2009 6:25:43 AM PST by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

palatable • \PAL-uh-tuh-bul\ • adjective

1. agreeable to the palate or taste *
2. agreeable or acceptable to the mind

* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:

When I asked Griffin for his opinion of the restaurant he said, "The food was bland and unimaginative, but at least the wine was palatable."

Did you know?
"Palatable" comes from "palate," a Latin-derived word for the roof of the mouth. The palate was once thought of as the seat of the sense of taste, so the word eventually came to mean "sense of taste," or broadly, "liking." "Palatable" has been used in English to refer to palate-pleasing foods since 1664, but it isn't our only -- or our oldest -- adjective for agreeable tastes. "Savory" dates from the 13th century. "Toothsome" has been around since 1551. "Tasty" was first used back in 1603. And "appetizing" has been gracing culinary reviews since 1653.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with today's WFTD.

It may be difficult thinking of any palatable aspect of the next four years.

Obama’s Inaugural: Hubris Will Bring Him Down
The Obama Presidency: Here Comes Socialism

No pushing at the door please!

Happy Humpday Everybody!

Only days left until BO's replacement is sworn in.

It’s time to put my activism shirt back on, Obama on day one has already threatened the Second Amendment, slapped a 120 day delay on the War Crimes Trials, and who knows what other unpalatable moves.

Sorry for the variation. I’m in “email the latest outrage” mode”

The “One”s” inaugural speech was barley palatable, I could only watch about 3 minutes of it.

I could only watch about 3 minutes of it.

That was about 2 minutes and 57 seconds more than I could stand.

Also, it appears Wilma’s dress is made from some type of fabric or hide, whereas Mean Michelle’s looks to be made from toilet paper.

Here is further proof that obama is a Christian in name only. He does not walk the walk, only attempts to talk the talk, in the vaguest sense, and sees no need to attend church. This in another reason why I find his views unpalatable.

Niebuhr had his failings, but he is credited with writing the serenity prayer. The attenuated version,”God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference” has been a guiding principle for thousands of recovering alcoholics in AA.

There is an even shorter version.

Now they think he’s a saint
Well is he is, or is he ain’t?
Libs think he, not the Pope, is infallatable
