Both Clarkson and Underwood have set high bars that no Idol will probably ever hit.
Sadly, the US listening public isn’t good at picking good singers. Kris is pretty good — actually really good — but there is a huge distance between really good and great.
The track record is pretty dismal.
If I was competing (hey, lets do “Fogey Idol!), top 10 would be enough to start a career where I can ply my craft and not suck up to 13 YO girls with a cell phone and too much time on their hands.

Kris says Adam deserved to win, he doesn't know what to say. Seacrest presents him with the American Idol trophy. The previous winners were all presented with their trophies earlier this year at Disneyland.

In the audience, Kris' brother and wife hold on to his mom--she might fall down. They're all shocked.
Fireworks and confetti rain down on the stage.
Carrie Underwood in the audience.
The Top 13 gather on the mini stage behind the judges. Kris' wife jumps up there to hug him. He cries on her shoulder.
