Excellent question.
Sadly, I think we will bow to Maersk’s request (it is their vessel) and not only free the pirates but see that they are paid the ransom they originally sought.
There will be an attempt to conceal this but it will fail.
It will be a sad day for America.

Jack and Sayid are the pirates, Kate and Sun-Hwa are their girlfriends and Hugo is the big, fat, capitalist American.

Great link! Very useful information.
Except in the list of things on board the lifeboat, they misspelled “pirates”:
“8).....two hatchets, one at each end of the lifeboat; (these are used to cut the painters)”

Why the hell does the Navy have to call in the FBI hostage negotiator to do their job?
Ooops. Never mind. It is the PC Navy now. I just forgot.
Navy is waiting for the FBI.
FBI is waiting for the State Department.
State Department is waiting for the Justice Department.
Justice Department is waiting for the Pres_ent.
Everyone is afraid to step up and make a decision, so they are pushing it to another authority. This is the PC world we live in.

This is interesting as well.
Why did the boat run out of gas?
The boat is required to have sufficient fuel to run the fully loaded lifeboat at 6 knots for a period of not less than 24 hours which is 144 nautical miles ( 165.7 statute miles) but it only traveled a few. Why?
There are two likely explanations for this. First safety inspections are carried out by the 3rd mate who is the most junior (i.e. inexperienced) officer. It is possible that he missed a problem with the lifeboat engines or fuel delivery system.
A more likely answer is that the captain sabotaged the engine. This would be easy to do since the pirates would likely little about the workings of a modern enclosed lifeboat which is much more complex than a basic skiff. It is also necessary to connect the battery switch which is often located in the engine compartment, giving Captain Phillips an excuse to open the hatch. Once in the hatch you could crimp the fuel line or block the air intake system, being a diesel engine, restricting fuel or air are the only two ways to safely stop and engine once started.

Yeah. I think that Captain, while being brave enough to “go down with the ship” as it were, is also smart enough to outwit these pirates.
He is the one that knows all about the boat, is probably in better physical condition than the pirates, is used to hard work and little sleep. I think in another day or so he’ll have the upper hand.

I’d be telling them that the rations were made of pork products. If starving they would eat it but I suspect they would hold off long enough to weaken some.

I'm no expert, but since it's international waters, I would think there is no "authority" except for maritime laws. Since it is a U.S.-flagged vessel, the USCG and Federal agents do have jurisdiction aboard, and U.S. law applies.

Same as Vietnam betrayal.
Obama is thinking of a way for our troops to be killed and make the Pirates heros.
It’s a set up trap choreography for commi f@gs.

Put a sniper in an OH-58 about 1200 meters away at night. A .50BMG round through each pirates torso and then send in the RIBs full of SEALS. Problem solved. Or should we just sit down to tea and try to use diplomacy?
Our dear leader thinks we should use international diplomacy instead. Ummmm. blow the bastards out of the water and then go use a few JDAMs on their base in Somalia.
Problem solved. Screw diplomacy. Stupid liberals.

They are waiting because those arrogant ( several Marines ) Americans took back their ship without negotiating or even contacting the U.N.
Obama is mighty upset and wont discuss it . His muzzie brothers will be livid !

On the warship there are probably Navy Seals. And it gets really dark in the middle of the ocean.

The nuclear powered USS Bainbridge is the fastest ship over there. It got there the quickest.

“Let them float around for a few days to get good and tired and then have a few SEALs swim up to the boat late in the night.”
Yeah, I’m thinking it will be over before morning. Probably couldn’t get the team there in time last night, plus the situation was kind of confused. A stun grenade into the boat would certainly do the trick.

When this happened before, good old Gerald Ford sent in the Marines and a handful ended the situation quickly and those pirates never took another hostage in their very brief lives. At the cost of 62 killed and wounded among the U.S. forces.
To: American Dream 246
OK I realize that the pirates could shoot the hostage. Kind of hard on the hostage, wouldn't you agree.
The pirates aren't going anywhere. Give it a day or so to see if they can be talked out of their hostage. There's plenty of time after that to storm the boat.
To: American Dream 246
Maybe they are trying to build up a force to threaten the pirate bosses in Somalia so they can say release the man or we will invade your hangouts.
I did hear they know the areas these pirates dwell.
