School Closing, 2 days for cleaning, (Flu) Canton MI
Resident | 05/03/2009 | taildragger

From a resident of Canton MI. The following was told to me

TOPICS:
KEYWORDS: flu; michigan
This resident received a electronic telephone call today that the school system will be closed for 2 days to disinfect them. Apparently a 16 yr old high school student has symtoms of the (what ever they are calling it) Swine-Flu. I have no media source for this at this time.

This is interesting. Downtown Plymouth is holding their second annual Green Street Fair this weekend. Maybe the crowds haven’t been great, but perhaps it is a good venue for sharing a virus?(I have not attended, as the mention of “Green” makes me see red.) Plymouth is contiguous with Canton, and they comprise one school district. I wonder how many kids will be at the malls tomorrow and Tuesday?

I’m in San Jose where we have 9 probable cases, and a high school by our house was closed.

My daughters school has not been closed, but I skipped a school auction last night. I actually helped with the set up, but skipped the actual auction. I was irritated when one of the teachers started talking about how she didn’t feel well the day before (she did miss school), but she was helping set up. I immediately went to the bathroom and washed my hands, and then I went home.

I’m in a wait mode with this whole swine flu thing. My daughters are high risk (one has asthma, and the other has epilepsy and heart problems) for complications from any flu.

I don’t want to under-react or over-react. When the school by us closed, I kept my daughters home from their school. One of their classmates has a sibling at the closed school.

Tomorrow, I’m calling the asthma specialist and the cardiologist to see what they recommend. I’m hoping they have a better feel for the situation then they did last week.

i live in nearby Westland i think the flu thing might be slightly overblown. i don't recall SARS and "Avian flu" being hyped up nearly as much

well..either way..better safe than sorry i guess.
