Bond girl Gemma Arterton to star in Wuthering Heights 'teen drama'

Gemma Arterton, the Bond girl, and Gossip Girl actor Ed Westwick are to star as Cathy and Heathcliff in a film adaptation of Wuthering Heights which recasts Emily Bronte's passionate tale as a teen drama.

According to the producers, actors who have appeared in past versions – most famously Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier in 1939 – have been too old to play the characters in Emily Bronte's novel.

Arterton is 23 and Westwick only 21. Producer Robert Bernstein explained: "We have cast it as written. Heathcliff is a teen and the story takes him into his early 20s. Cathy is just as young. It's radical because usually actors playing these characters are much older."

The film will be directed by Peter Webber, whose previous credits include the Scarlett Johansson film Girl With A Pearl Earring.

Arterton took the role of Cathy after the original choice, Natalie Portman, dropped out. This is her second major period role, after playing Tess of the d'Urberville's in the recent BBC adaptation.

Westwick is known to teenage girls across the Atlantic as Chuck Bass, a character in hit US series Gossip Girl. Although he plays an American, he originally hails from Stevenage and trained at the National Youth Theatre. Bronte's 1847 novel set on the windswept Yorkshire moors has been adapted numerous times for television and film.

The Olivier version won an Oscar and was nominated for seven more. The last film adaptation was in 1992, with Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes in the lead roles.
