National Sales Tax Chatter Draws Fierce Opposition

As lawmakers toy with the idea of an across-the-board sales tax on just about everything, tax reform advocates are starting to drum up opposition with the same fervor they employed during last month's anti-tax tea parties.

The idea of a national sales tax was once unlikely. But now that the federal government is doling out billions in stimulus spending and bailouts, and looking for billions more for health care reform, the prospect could be gaining some traction.

The VAT is not a sales tax, its hidden inside the prices of products

Well they sure are giving republican’s in 2010 issues. Taxation is something that no one wants and between the carbon tax ( literally taxing the air), this national sales tax and all of the other taxation they’ve proposed it would be hard not to pound the issue home.

Yep.
Canadians know this.
It’s one of the most expensive taxes to collect and audit, and it KILLS competition.
That’s why a huge percentage of Canadians regularly engage in smuggling along the US border.

I wish that some articulate conservative would explain to the ignorant masses the differences between the Fair Tax and 0bama's European style VAT tax. Every time one of these liberals or their flacks in the MSM start pushing for the VAT, someone like Neil Bortz should explain.

1) The Fair tax includes repeal of the 16th ammendment and reduction in the power of the IRS

2) Under a Fair Tax the tax rate can only be raised by a super majority in congress or in the event of national emergence such as a War. Once the emergency ends, the tax goes back down.

3) Lord Zer0's VAT is applied at every stage of production causing exponential rises in prices. The Fair tax is collected once at the point of sale.

4) Necessities like food clothing and shelter are exempt from a fair tax.

5)A fair tax encourages saving, the VAT encourages government growth.

Congress critters know there is no need for a VAT consumptions tax. There has been a non VAT consumption tax before Congress since 1999. It's called The Fair Tax(HR25/S296). It will replace all federal income taxes with a non VAT national sales tax and abolish the IRS. Click on the icons below for more information.

Not really. In the UK you did see the VAT broken out as a percentage of whatever you were paying for. At least in the early 1990s - I know, I saw my bills.

Exactly, most people would be fine with the federal government swapping sales for income tax... well most people who pay income tax but the fed will *never* quietly give up the ability to get a chunk of your take home pay before you do..

That is a myth.

There would still be a Federal entity that would collect the taxes and audit the books of businesses that paid the taxes.

The only difference would be that the Federal Tax collector would not be out to get individuals (with the exception of small business owners).

Haven’t you heard the news? 95% of Americans are getting a tax cut.

It’s only the rich who are paying higher taxes, and they can afford to spread the wealth.

Excellent comments from FReepers! VAT tax is being pushed in addition to income tax we already have. It will effect everyone no matter what their income. Stock up before they benefit from it. They are using our money to fund foreign interests while apologizing to the world for our way of life that has made us a strong and a great nation. Universal health care, billions to IMF, almost a billion to Hamas, print more money, tax everyone to pay for the socialist, communist revolution, all of us who work and pay taxes will be asked to give even more to fund something that goes against everything we believe in. etc...

It gets worse every freakin day.

Thanks metmom for the heads up.

I was just thinking my taxes were too low.

Yeah, me too. Here it is one day shy of payday and I've still got folding money in my pocket, and I'm thinking, "Dang it, I sure wish the government would take this from me!"

It doesn't work for everything, though. Ask a passing policeman to please kick you in the nuts and they look at you like you're weird or something...

You're correct! The federal government will still be the tax authority via the Treasury Department. However it will be far smaller and far less intrusive since the number of tax filers will be reduced from 140 million today to 40 million under the Fair Tax.

The only difference would be that the Federal Tax collector would not be out to get individuals (with the exception of small business owners).

It is not a trivial difference that the federal government will no longer be able to peer into every personal aspect of a person's life with a multitude of forms. The federal government will not be "out to get" business owners and will not be the exception as they will only need to submit information pertaining to how much sales tax they collected. They will not be required to pay tax on their income derived from the business.

The simple act of distribution adds value. 10,000 pencils are the local wholesaler are arguably worth more, per pencil, than 100,000 pencils at the regional wholesaler.

This is how they tax every business interaction.

What they may do is try to lure Republicans into trading off a VAT for lower corporate taxes which may have some merit for trade competition but politically it would be in effect taxing the poor for those greedy corporations (generally a good idea) and since republicans got burned by bailouts they should not give democrats their support.

3) Incorrect. A VAT typically includes a credit for the VAT that was embedded at the earlier stages of production, so it is not exponential, merely cumulative.

4) Incorrect. The FairTax applies to ALL goods and services and doesn’t exempt food, clothing, or shelter. On the oher hand, why would you want to exempt anything ? Security, judiciary, infrastructure, prisons, etc. are just as much “necessities” of life so why shouldn’t everybody have to pay for them ? Attempting to “untax” the “working poor” just encourages people to be “poor” by adjusting the definition of “poor” until they magically qualify to be untaxed.

The FairTax would be a fine idea if the rate was no more than 10%, there was no “prebate”, and the funding of SS/M was left out of it. That would be enough to completely replace the personal and corporate income tax revenues without driving the wealthy out of the country. All the benefits of the FairTax, but none of its drawbacks.

How much worse will things have to get, especially with glaring examples like CA and NY, before even the Dems admit that trying to get the “wealthy” to pay for EVERYTHING just doesn’t work ?

I’d like to see an Amendment that puts to bed any variation in tax methods and takes away the government’s ABILITY to constantly tinker. I wouldn’t even mind having both Income and Sales taxes — say 7% Flat Income Tax + 7% NRST, with no exemptions, deductions, or credits — all at the individual level without the artificial attempt to tax corporations. This would raise so much more revenue than the current income tax that you could fund the deficit in SS/M while it was dismantled in favor of a mandatory 10% retirement savings (IRA style) requirement.

They know that. It’s political. You tell people you can pay for everything without taxing them. Then you raise the rich taxes. Then you raise ours but say the rich are paying more so dont feel bad. Its a trip for fools/

The federal government will not be "out to get" business owners and will not be the exception as they will only need to submit information pertaining to how much sales tax they collected.

I don’t know if you have ever been in the retail business or not, but let me tell you when you have to collect taxes for the state the state is all over you to make sure that they get every dime coming to them.

I know of several business owners that lost pretty much everything because they hit a rough patch in their business and got behind on their sale tax payments or SS payments or employee income tax payments. The state didn’t give an inch.

I do not think that businesses should be tax collectors. There is too much potential for the business operator to end up in jail because of clerical error or if business is bad that the operator makes a bad decision and does not send the money.

I have even seen cases where business is bad and the owner was making regular sales tax payments as required and the state comes in to audit the books and claims that the owner was making off ledger sales because the sales on the books where too different from his previous years sales. Even when he showed them his invoices they didn’t believe him.

I don’t care how you structure a tax it comes down to individuals because that is the only way to ensure that the taxes are collected. Some one has to feel the pain. The government will target the individual because you can’t put a business in jail.
