Pit Bull Attack Sends Girl To Hospital; Owner Says Dog Usually Friendly, Playful

OKLAHOMA CITY -- An 8-year-old girl was sent to a hospital after being attacked by a pit bull on Friday.

The dog has been quarantined by animal control officers after Chelsea Shackelford was attacked near Southeast 51st Street and Madera Boulevard. Experts said they need to make sure the dog doesn't have rabies or any other disease.

Neighbors said they don't think the dog is vicious and that the bite was an accident. The 5-month-old pit bull named Big Boy, they said, was just a playful family dog.

"He was in the back yard," said owner Curtis McNeary. "I don't know if somebody came checking the meter or whatever and left the gate halfway unlatched so he unlatched it the rest of the way. I guess he was running around."

Chelsea's father said he had gone to tell the neighbors that their dog was out when his daughter was bitten. He said his friend put the dog in a headlock to get him off of her, but she had bites on her knee and the back of her leg.

McNeary said he was surprised by what happened but thinks the dog was just playing.

"He's not vicious at all," he said. "He plays with kids all the time."

He said he doesn't know if he'll have the money to get Big Boy out of the pound when the time comes. He said the dog may have to be put down.

Chelsea's parents said they don't blame their neighbors. They said they think the dog was either playing with their daughter or became defensive because she was on their property while its owners weren't home.

If the dog sends the girl to the hospital, the dog owner needs to go to jail.

He said he doesn't know if he'll have the money to get Big Boy out of the pound when the time comes.

Then he obviously doesn't need to own a dog. You can get a betta at PetsMart for $5.

I can definitely see how multiple bites and having to put the beast in a headlock to get it off the child would qualify as an "accident."

Pit bull . . . USUALLY friendly.

Just don’t be around when he’s having a bad hair day.

A dog bite “accident” is when the kid is holding a treat and the over eager dog nips the hand while going for the treat.

By all accounts, Ted Bundy was “usually” friendly. Just kind of sucked to be around him when he wasn’t in a friendly mood.

That is the problem. “Usually” doesn’t cut it 100% of the time. Not when it’s your face and body they decide to chomp on awhile.

Jeffrey Dahmer was a quiet guy who ‘usually’ kept to himself. When the circumstances were juuuuuuust right however for a brief time he’d act uncharacteristically and kill you and eat you. But then he’d be back to normal. Neighbors said he was a nice guy, smiled a lot.

If the dog sends the girl to the hospital, the dog owner needs to go to jail.

Why? What's in the jail that will help the situation?

I reckon the dog owner needs to go to the store and get a leash instead.

Or are there discount leashes in the jail?

People need to control their dogs and if they are unable to control their dogs, they need to take responsibility for their actions. A dog can be a weapon and we are held criminally responsible if they cannot handle a weapon a a person is hurt or killed.

As for me, I have two dogs that I took the time to train very well. They are under my control at all times, even if they are 100 meters down field, they abide by my commands. It is all quite easy, take responibility for your dog.

they need to take responsibility for their actions.

That might include paying the medical expenses of the girl with the bitten leg.

Where does jail enter the picture?

By the way, my dog (Mason, formerly Flyer's dog, until he died on us)
is instructed to attack everyone who comes onto the property.

He fails to do this.

I think his refusal is mostly due to age.

Eaker has brought his Pitbull mix over here more than once.

Mason didn't attack him either.

Pitstop was stalked by one of the cats until he playfully
chased Malcolm cat up a tree, where Malcolm made fun of him.

It was play. Pitstop and Malcolm cat were having fun.

Nurture over nature.

Pitbulls are not bad, they are taught to be bad sometimes.

It can happen to any species, man included.

Loose dogs like this are the reason I carry a pistol on neighborhood walks.

I’m not taking another bite to see if a charging dog is really going to bite me.

I figure if I cull the pack, that’s one child that won’t get mauled later on.

Prayers for the little girl and prayers for any idiot who thinks that someone in the history of time has put a headlock on an enraged 75+ pound dog.
