That depends on the intent of the faithful.
If any of the Irish are Pre-Saint Patrick, they are probably worshiping the stump.
(for reference, see Veggie Tales “Sumo of the Opera” and watch the added feature on Saint Patrick)
However, if they truly see a deception of the Virgin Mary, and are not worshiping the stump but rather reminded of the Mother of Christ, then it is not idolatry. Because no matter how it looks to you, it is what is in each worshiper’s heart and intent that counts.

If this isnt paganism, what is?Maybe some people just need some tangible proofs for their faith.

Pretty sure I have never seen those words in the same sentence. Ive seen them seperately; not together.
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
May the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Somebody please make these dummies stop. This is just flat-out embarrassing. Looks like the priests might feel that way. They don't want to condemn the practice, but...

Don’t forget this one: May you be in heaven a half hour before the devil even knows you’re dead.

I’m not sure how this would qualify as a “tangible proof.”

Im not sure how this would qualify as a tangible proof.In the sense that it can be seen. How often do stories come up about people seeing the image of Jesus in everything from window panes to zucchini?

Maybe some people just need some tangible proofs for their faithIf I was looking to oddly shaped tree trunks as a proof of my faith, I think I'd just give up and declare myself an agnostic already.

A few too many wee drams o’ Jameson’s whisky, methinks.

I’m an irish catholic who has imbibed in some Guinness on occasion and I think this is a bit of a stretch.
