Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

Conservation Reserve Program Celebrates 25 Years
USDA is marking the 25th anniversary of the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), a voluntary program that encourages agricultural landowners to convert highly erodible cropland or other environmentally sensitive acreage to vegetative cover. Landowners receive annual rental payments and cost-share assistance to establish long-term conservation practices on eligible farmland. To date, the total national CRP stands at 31.3 million acres enrolled in nearly 738,000 contracts. “Although it was designed to address soil erosion, CRP has become one of the standouts in the USDA arsenal of conservation programs by continuing to provide significant economic and environmental benefits beyond its original intent,” noted Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

California Appellate Court Upholds Pesticide Drift Case
This week California’s 6th District Court of Appeal in San Jose upheld an organic herb farmer’s right to sue a pesticide applicator over contamination of his crop, and let stand the $1 million award a jury
handed the grower two years ago, reports San Jose Mercury News. The decision is significant, agriculture and law experts say, because it strengthens the case for organic farmers or anyone else harmed by pesticides to seek legal recourse, even if the pesticide is legally applied. While state law restricts pesticides from being sprayed on neighboring properties, which is known as pesticide drift, the law doesn’t deal specifically with pesticides that disperse into the air after application and end up someplace else, as happened in this case. Attorneys for the pesticide applicator, Western Farm Service, argued that since the company had not run afoul of state law, Jacobs Farm did not have the right to sue. The Court of Appeals, in its 32-page ruling, dismissed that argument and contended that the jury could hold the pesticide company liable for tainting the organic crops at Jacobs Farm.

Biodiesel Tax Incentive Retroactively Extended
On December 17 President Barack Obama signed H.R. 4853, legislation that among its provisions retroactively extends the biodiesel tax incentive through 2011. According to The Biodiesel Board, the biodiesel tax incentive is structured in a manner that makes the fuel price competitive with conventional diesel fuel in the marketplace. The lapse of the tax incentive on December 31, 2009 has had a detrimental impact on the domestic biodiesel industry. Conversely, retroactive reinstatement and extension of the tax incentive through 2011, as provided for in H.R. 4853, is widely expected to increase U.S. biodiesel production.

California Ag Vision 2030 Unveiled
The California State Board of Food and Agriculture reached a milestone in the Ag Vision process on December
16th when it unveiled the California Ag Vision 2030 recommendations. “The Ag Vision recommendations reflect the combined needs of California’s farmers and ranchers and those stakeholders interested in our food system,” said CDFA Secretary A.G. Kawamura. “Collaboration among these groups is key to creating a sustainable future within the agricultural sector. I congratulate everyone who has participated in this process.” The Ag Vision recommendations reflect a consensus among representatives from the environmental, labor, food access and nutrition communities as well as California’s farmers and ranchers. The policy recommendations address such issues as environmental regulations, invasive species, agricultural workforce, conservation, and adaptation to climate change. The complete report is available online(http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/agvision/docs/Ag_Vision_Final_Report_Dec_2010.pdf).

Consumer Survey Finds Families Buying More Organic Food
In spite of the sluggish economic recovery, U.S. families continue to buy more organic products than ever before and from a wider variety of categories, according to findings from the latest consumer study jointly sponsored by the Organic Trade Association and KIWI Magazine. In fact, 41 percent of parents report they are buying more organic foods today than a year ago, up significantly from 31 percent reporting organic purchases in 2009, according to the U.S. Families’ Organic Attitudes & Beliefs 2010 tracking study. The survey, conducted between Aug. 11 and 27, 2010, also found that parents buy organic because they see organic products are generally healthier, address their concern about the effects of pesticides, hormones and antibiotics on children, or provide a means to avoid highly processed foods and/or artificial ingredients.

Study Says Rotation, No-till Can Limit Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Using no-till and corn-soybean rotation practices in farm fields can significantly reduce field emissions of the greenhouse
gas nitrous oxide, according to a Purdue University study. Tony Vyn, a professor of agronomy, found that no-till reduces nitrous oxide emissions by 57 percent over chisel tilling, which mixes crop residue into surface soil, and 40 percent over moldboard tilling, which completely inverts soil as well as the majority of surface residue. Using a corn-soybean rotation instead of continuous corn decreased nitrous oxide emissions by 20 percent in the three-year study. Vyn said the reduction could be even greater, though, because for the long-term experiment, both continuous corn and rotation crops were fertilized based on the needs of continuous corn. “There is more nitrous oxide emission coming from agriculture than the tailpipes of cars and trucks,” Vyn said. “And there is likely to be more nitrous oxide emission if we increase nitrogen application rates to increase cereal yields.”

University of Toronto Sky Garden uses the BIOTOP system

But with space in Toronto at such a premium, where can you find a place to plant?

Try looking up. Way up. If you’re on campus in the heart of U of T Engineering,
you just might spot a leafy green or two.

Tucked under the clouds atop the conjoining rooftops of the Galbraith and Sanford
Fleming buildings is the Sky Garden.

What’s the Best Way to Turn a Parking Lot into a Garden?

WOOSTER, Ohio - An old asphalt parking lot might not seem like a good place for
a garden.

But in urban areas it can be. It tends to be cheap open land. And an Ohio State
University expert on intensive small-scale horticulture has started a three-year
study on what works best there.

Joe Kovach, who specializes in maximizing fruit and vegetable production in limited
spaces, is comparing three ways to do it in empty, abandoned parking lots: in giant-sized
pots and in raised beds on top of the blacktop, and in trenches cut right through
it.

Robot harvests food in the city by Julie Dillon

“This was a piece I did a few months ago for ‘Crossed Genres’ “Science in my Fiction”
publication. A robot has been carefully tending gardens planted on abandoned highway
overpasses.”

How one urban farmer battled red tape to sell local food and flowers in LA

Kolla enhanced her soil with organic compost and planted it with dozens of annual
and perennial varieties not usually sold by commercial florists. She invested about
$15,000 in a truck and materials, including seeds, soil mix, and a market stand.

“I had 14 rows, 15 feet each, of annuals such as sweet peas, ranunculus, cornflowers,
anemones-dainty, old-fashioned flowers that people seem to really respond to because
they are so quaint,” Kolla says.

Holsman Selected To Chair Joint Committee on Urban Agriculture

The Missouri General Assembly’s newly established Joint Committee on Urban Agriculture
held its first organizational meeting on Thursday afternoon.

On the agenda for the
committee’s inaugural meeting was election of a chairperson and vice-chair, as well
as the approval of a slate of nominees to serve on a technical advisory subcommittee.

When it came time to select a committee chair, Representative Tom Loehner (R-Koeltztown)
nominated Representative Jason Holsman (D-Kansas City).

AUDIENCE: Hospital Risk Managers, Pharmacy, Emergency Medicine

ISSUE: American Regent and FDA notified healthcare professionals of the nationwide recall of specific lots of Sodium Bicarbonate Injection, USP, 7.5% and 8.4%, 50 mL Single Dose Vials because some vials of these lots contain particulates. Potential adverse events after intravenous administration include damage to blood vessels in the lung, localized swelling, and granuloma formation.

BACKGROUND: Sodium Bicarbonate Injection, USP, is indicated in the treatment of metabolic acidosis which may occur in severe renal disease, uncontrolled diabetes, circulatory insufficiency due to shock or severe dehydration, extracorporeal circulation of blood, cardiac arrest and severe primary lactic acidosis. Sodium bicarbonate is further indicated in the treatment of certain drug intoxications, including barbiturates (where dissociation of the barbiturate-protein complex is desired), in poisoning by salicylates or methyl alcohol and in hemolytic reactions requiring alkalinization of the urine to diminish nephrotoxicity of blood pigments. Sodium bicarbonate is also indicated in severe diarrhea which is often accompanied by a significant loss of bicarbonate.

RECOMMENDATION: Hospitals, infusion centers, clinics and other healthcare facilities should not use American Regent Inc., Sodium Bicarbonate Injection, USP, 7.5% and 8.4%, 50 mL Single Dose Vials with the lot #s list in the firm press release for patient care and should immediately quarantine any product for return.

The Ritedose Corporation Announces the Voluntary Nationwide Recall of 0.083% Albuterol Sulfate Inhalation Solution, 3 mL Due to Mislabeled Unit Dose Vials

Contact:
The Ritedose Corporation
803-935-3995
recall@ritedose.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - December 30, 2010 - The Ritedose Corporation is conducting a voluntary recall of 0.083% Albuterol Sulfate Inhalation Solution, 3 mL (in 25, 30, and 60 unit dose vials). This product is a prescription inhalation solution, administered via nebulization, for the treatment and maintenance of acute asthma exacerbations and exercise induced asthma in children and adults. This product is being recalled because the 2.5 mg/3 mL single use vials are embossed with the wrong concentration of 0.5 mg/ 3 mL and therefore, represents a potential significant health hazard. The following lot numbers manufactured by The Ritedose Corporation under NDC: 0591-3797-83, 0591-3797-30, and 0591-3797-60 are included in the recall: 0N81, 0N82, 0N83, 0N84, 0NE7, 0NE8, 0NE9, 0NF0, 0P12, 0P13, 0P46, 0P47, 0PF0, and 0S15. No other Albuterol formulations or products are included in this recall.

The product is packaged as a single use unit dose vials in a protective foil overwrap packaged in a shelf carton. Only the unit dose vials are incorrectly embossed as containing 0.5 mg/3 mL. The correct concentration of 2.5 mg/3 mL is labeled on the primary foil overwrap pouches and shelf cartons. This product was distributed nationwide and Puerto Rico.

Administration of this defective product could result in a range of potential health effects that spans from temporary and medically reversible to life threatening and death. There is significant concern that health professionals who read the incorrect embossed concentration may upwardly adjust the volume of product used resulting in an administered amount that is 5 times the recommended dose. In the hospital setting, the vials are often not accompanied by the rest of the packaging, making it more likely that such a dosing error could occur. Significant overdosing of a patient could lead to signs and symptoms of albuterol toxicity, which includes tremors, dizziness, nervousness, headache, seizures, angina, high blood pressure, low potassium levels, and rapid heart rates up to 200 beats/minute.

The Ritedose Corporation is working cooperatively with the U.S. FDA to implement a nationwide recall as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Consumers should immediately return the affected product to the place it was obtained (i.e. doctor’s office, pharmacy, etc.). Wholesalers and retailers should return the product to the following address:

Total Product Destruction
Attn: RECALL
8025 Howard Street
Spartanburg, SC 29303

For more information concerning this recall contact The Ritedose Corporation directly at phone: 803-935-3995 Monday through Friday 8am to 5 pm EST or by e-mail: recall@ritedose.com.

Adverse reactions or quality problems experienced with the use of this product may be reported to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online, or regular mail or by fax.

I thought this was interesting.

What gives Ivory Soap it’s familiar scent?

It’s Lemongrass essential oil.

A pleasant, clean fragrance used in soaps,

A great antiseptic, studies show that Lemongrass

Chefs Pick ‘Local’ as Top Restaurant Trend of 2011
The National Restaurant Association asked more than 1500 chefs, all members of the non-profit American Culinary Federation, to predict the top restaurant trends for 2011, and the resounding answer was local, reports delish. The top ten trends identified were:
1. Locally sourced meats and seafood
2. Locally grown produce
3. Sustainability
4. Nutritionally balanced children’s dishes
5. “Hyper local,” such as restaurants with their own gardens and chefs who do their own butchering.
6. Children’s nutrition
7. Sustainable seafood
8. Gluten-free food and being food allergy conscious
9. Simplicity/back to basics
10. Farm/estate-branded ingredients

Study Reveals Major Decline in Bumble Bees
The first in-depth national study of wild bees in the U.S. has uncovered major losses in the relative abundance of several bumble bee species and declines in their geographic range since record-keeping began in the late 1800s. The new study appears this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “We have 50 species of bumble bees in North America. We’ve studied eight of them and four of these are significantly in trouble,” said University of Illinois entomology professor Sydney Cameron, who led the study. The national analysis found that the relative abundances of four of the eight species analyzed have declined by as much as 96 percent and that their surveyed geographic ranges have shrunk by 23 to 87 percent.

Wheat Growing Expected to Adapt to Climate Change
A new study shows that since 1839, North American wheat crops spread into regions with even wider temperature and precipitation differences than will arise over the next century as a result of climate change, reports Discovery News. This analysis by economist Alan Olmstead of the University of California, Davis, and economist Paul Rhode of the University of Michigan,
Ann Arbor, suggests it will be possible to adapt to new wheat-growing conditions. The pair used a county-by-country record of wheat production in North America from 1839 to 2007 to document how wheat-growing conditions changed over time. They found that in 2007 the median annual temperature norm for areas of wheat production was 6.6 degrees Fahrenheit colder than in 1839, and that average precipitation was halved. Although U.S. wheat production may adapt successfully to climate change, Stephen Baenziger of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln expresses two concerns: first, that the future may bring not just warmer, but more variable, conditions, and second, that conditions may be much more difficult in other parts of the world. “I’m optimistic about wheat production in the U.S.,” he said. “ I’m far less optimistic about what it means when it gets hotter and drier in sub-Saharan Africa.”

Study Experiments with Best Way to Turn Parking Lot to Garden
An Ohio State University expert on intensive small-scale horticulture has started a three-year study comparing
three ways to maximize fruit and vegetable production in empty, abandoned parking lots: in giant-sized pots, in raised beds on top of the blacktop, or in trenches cut right through the asphalt. Joe Kovach’s study could boost the use of abandoned urban land. It could help people who live in urban food deserts grow more of their own tomatoes, spinach and other fresh produce. Kovach wants to see if depaving only the trenches is a simpler but still-productive option than depaving; if waist-high pots are easier to tend than ankle- or knee-high raised beds; and what sort of freezing, drying or overheating problems might come up in any of the systems. Plant Density Gene Could Increase Biomass Value
Scientists
at The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation have uncovered a gene responsible for controlling key growth characteristics in plants, specifically the density of plant material. Denser plants have more biomass without increasing the agricultural footprint, meaning farmers and ranchers can produce more plant material from the same sized field. Plants that have increased density hold great potential to be used to produce biofuels, electricity and even advanced materials, like carbon fiber. Research targeting plants that are grazed by animals has historically focused on reducing lignin production within the plant. However, increasing lignin in non-food crops, such as switchgrass, may be desirable for increasing the density of the biomass and producing more feedstock per plant and, therefore, more per acre. This research was recently published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Funding Opportunities

Conservation Innovation Grant—Greenhouse Gas
For the purpose of this CIG funding, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) seeks to stimulate the application of greenhouse gas benefiting practices on agricultural land. The grantee would secure the participation of agricultural producers, determine baseline values of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and/or carbon sequestration,
verify the implementation and maintenance of GHG benefiting practices, and determine GHG benefits (additionality) so that these benefits can be successfully registered in a commonly recognized carbon registry. Beyond this, successful applicants will develop linkages between these registered carbon credits with existing or newly emerging market structures. NRCS intends to make funding available through its regular EQIP program to contract directly with participating producers to incentivize the application of GHG benefiting practices. NRCS will accept applications for single or multi-year projects, not to exceed 3 years, submitted to NRCS from eligible entities including federally recognized Indian tribes, State and local units of government, and non-governmental organizations and individuals. Applications are accepted from all 50 States, the Caribbean Area and the Pacific Islands Area.
Applications are due February 11, 2011.
