The Professor who failed his entire class

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had once failed an entire class.

That class had insisted that Obama’s socialism worked and that if enacted, no one would be poor and no one would be rich. It would be a great equalizer.

The professor then said, “OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama’s plan.”

The Professor decided that all grades would be averaged together and everyone would receive the same grade. No one would fail, but no one would receive an A either.

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone received a B.

The students who studied hard were upset, but the students who studied little were happy.

As a result of the averaged grade, both the students who studied hard as well as the students who studied little decided to study even less for the second exam.

The average score this time was a D and no one was happy.

When the 3rd exam rolled around, the average score was an F.

The scores never increased and students blamed each other for the overall poor performance of the class. No one wanted to study hard for the benefit of another student.

To their great surprise, all students failed the course. The professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when the government takes all of the reward away, no one will try hard or want to succeed.

I do believe this is not a true tale. It doesn't matter. That isn't the point. The point as far as I can tell is to illustrate how stealing from one group and giving to another is a sure fire path to disaster.

If it were true, he’d be sued and unemployed and the talking heads would be dining on his reputation.

This reminds me of the story Rush Limbaugh tells every Thanksgiving about how The Pilgrims first arranged their society upon arriving in The New World.

Everything was put into a "common store" which anyone could take from as he or she saw fit.

It wasn't long before people realized their were able-bodied men who didn't lift a finger to produce anything but didn't hesitate to take from the store.

They eventually decided that every family would get a plot of land and whatever was produced on that land could be dispensed as the producer saw fit.

Long story short; problem fixed.

I like that story whether it is true or not. Bookmarked.

They should have taken socialism to its inevitable end: Shoot the lazy, bad students for being enemies of the revolution and shoot the good students who try to make a run to the registrar's office to drop the class to escape.

feel free to show others.

Any way you slice it it’s very illustrative.

I agree, this would actually show students the real effects of socialism. This reminds me of the time that I was telling my Mom about an Honor Roll assembly that we had been invited to for the kids. She said she didn’t think having an assembly to honor the smart kids was fair to the other kids that didn’t make honor roll. I said, “ MOM, if the other kids want to go to the assembly, they need to work as hard as my kids do to make good grades!” G-d bless her Democrat soul.

This is a variant of the "tragedy of the commons" story usually told in econ 101.

Very few students understand it until they start paying their own way.

The Pilgrim story was true...hence the first attempt at a “commonwealth” in this country....the professor story, not so true other than than the principle being illustrated.

My daughter’s chemistry professor told that same story in class, when the students were begging him to “curve the grades”. After that, there was no more talking about curving, everybody studied and did the best he/she could!

So, you are saying that central planning doesn’t make the population wealthy? Interesting...

I thought no one would fail?

If an F is both the highest as well as the lowest, it is by definition not a failure. It’s equal.

It’s the bigotry of low expectations.

Welcome to the brave new world where everybody deals in reward free opportunities

An excellent tale to explain the inherent problems with socialism.....

Perfect for college students...explains it without sounding like you are preaching...... Should be published in every college paper!

when the government takes all of the reward away, no one will try hard or want to succeed

I was talking to a friend of mine's little girl the other day. I asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up and she replied, "I want to be President!"

Both of her parents are liberal Democrats and were standing there.

So then I asked her, "If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?"

She replied, "I'd give houses to all the homeless people."

"Wow - what a worthy goal."

I told her, "You don't have to wait until you're President to do that. You can come over to my house and mow, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where this homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward a new house."

Since she is only 6, she thought that over for a few seconds.

While her Mom glared at me, she looked me straight in the eye and asked, "Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?"

And I said, "Welcome to the Republican Party."
