Why eating popcorn is good for your health

Popcorn could help prevent cancer, research suggests.

Scientists discovered the snack food contains 'surprisingly large' levels of health-boosting antioxidants called polyphenols.

Polyphenols in fruit and vegetables are thought to help reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and other diseases.

The U.S. study was led by the chemist Dr Vinson from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania. It is the first to establish that snack foods and some wholegrain breakfast cereals are a good source of polyphenols.

He said: 'We really were surprised by the levels of polyphenols we found in popcorn. I guess its because it's not processed. You get all the wonderful ingredients of the corn undiluted and protected by the skin. In my opinion it's a good health food.'

The study measured polyphenol concentration in breakfast cereals and snacks, showing there are more antioxidants in less processed wholegrain cereals, while popcorn has the most among the snack foods tested.

Hot breakfast foods such as porridge oats had disappointingly low levels of polyphenols, said Dr Vinson.

The research supports the idea that is the polyphenols in whole grains, rather than their fibre content, that makes them healthy.

Dr Vinson, who presented his findings to the American Chemical Society in Washington last night, added: 'Wholegrain products have comparable antioxidants per gram to fruits and vegetables.'

Wasn't popcorn on the hit list of that Center for Science in the Public Interest [sic] (either before or after pizza and Chinese food)?

Yet another proof that people should just eat what they want! ;-)

Yes, pan. LOL It’s cheaper, I can use olive oil and as much salt/butter as I want.

‘Sides I’m out of the microwave stuff.

Just dug out my 20-year-old hot-air popper. Nice to get fresh, crisp, greaseless, perfect popcorn. I was going to use it for roasting coffee, but that “last batch” was just too good to smoke up the thing. Now I need another hot-air popper.

I wonder if he tested the kernels before or after they were popped? It would be a drag if you got the healthy ingredients only if you ate it raw.

Can live without it not like its dark chocolate or some other IMO yummy treat.

We eat popcorn and dark chocolate M&Ms together. The sweet and salt go really well together.

I think that was movie popcorn....the stuff with 2 pounds of arterie clogging 100% butter.

Give 'em another year or two! I read recently that coconut oil is good for you (helps you lose weight); IIRC it was banned a few years back because of "public" outcry, and now the place to find it is in health food stores.

Rush always complains that good-tasting popcorn (movie popcorn?) can't be made with coconut oil anymore because the "Food Nazis" apparently banned it. What's the latest verdict on coconut oil, anyone know?

If you missed my earlier post, now it's found that coconut oil helps you lose weight (something about the molecular structure), and you can find it in health food stores!

I found it in Walmart (vitamin section) -- it's really great in applesauce-bran muffins! :) Next time I looked (it's pretty expensive), I found a slightly cheaper one, also in Walmart, but in the shortening section.
