Yes, I vote for Irish Setter, too. My parents got a beautiful one when we were little. It chewed EVERYTHING in the house. We only had it a short time, you can’t fix stupid. LOL!

All the adopted greyhounds I've met seem to be pretty calm. Except when Ruby comes frolicking up to them and yells, "WANTA RACE?"

Amazingly, she can keep up with them until they hit top gear.

I have taken to shutting my bathroom door cause every time I don’t I find the roll of TP shredded into a million pieces.

That would be like our Border Collie: “This is GREAT fun, wanna join?”

The Aussie is a guilt-stricken, repentant sinner. In the same circumstance, he’ll be found sitting next to the front door, head down, his 75 lbs shaking like a leaf.

Never gets in trouble, so it MAY just be a very convincing act!

Fortunately Ruby is a specialist and limits her efforts to kleenex.

We put the box in a plastic container so she can only rifle the trash cans . . . you know she has sneaked into and out of a room when the wastebasket is lying on its side.

Have you seen that thing about the difference between Goldens and Labs? Goldens are Catholics, they understand the concept of guilt. Labs are Protestants ("What guilt?")

My favorite, though, is "When you come home and the lamp is broken, the Golden says, "Broken lamp? I must have done it. I was outside the whole time, but I must have done it. Oh, no! Somebody's unhappy!" While the Lab says, "Broken lamp? Yeah, I did it. I was having tons of fun! Want to watch me break the other one?"

No matter what breed, I just love the canis variety.

My wolves are one thng... awesome. All dogs, I can never imagine not having one. Thus my 2 little pups. Tiny house, tiny house dogs : )

A home is not complete unless there is a dog to bless it.

Bulldogs are extremely smart people just have low expectations of them and they are stubborn. Ours is going on 10 and he knows how to play all of us!

munson

This is Remington, we got him just after Labor Day. German Shorthaired Pointer, very smart, but lots of energy!! Photobucket

Irish Setters are among the prettiest. I’ve heard they are dumb, odd that they look like they are cousin to golden retrievers which are very smart.

8:19pm central and have not read thru the entire thread yet but damed glad someone mentioned the Beagle. I have owned nothing but Labs over my many years, but through one ex-wife (She actually got him in the divorce) I picked up a Beagle pup. He had th be the smartest dog I ever, ever owned. That dog, Trouble was his name, knew the tome of my voice, happy or angry...and if I wanted him to do something, there was no voice or hand commands...I could give him a certain look and/or a head nod.

I remember once a rabbit ran across our suburban lawn and trouble looked at me hard for about 15 seconds. I did not head not...I did not say "Go get em", I merely said "okay" and off he blew...of course he never caught the rabbit and he came back dragging his head, but...

I have and have had some smart Labs...but nothing on the range of smarts in Trouble...and he was a Lemon Drop Beagle...two tone tan and white...no black and brown in his coloring...super dog that B&tch got in the divorce (But I am not bitter...hope she gets a job with Obama).

Our current dog ("Teddy") is a black labradoodle (Labrador/Standard Poodle mix.) Besides being the worst shedding dog I've ever had, he's damn' smart. I can talk to him like he's one of my kids (but he listens better than they do and does what he's told.)

Prior to him we had a German Shepherd/Golden Retriever mix ("Jerry") also one smart dog, but in different ways and he was very protective of our children when they were small. I can't tell you how many accidents/near accidents this dog prevented with our kids while they were learning to walk.

The dog I had when I married my wife was a Golden Retriever. One smart dog he was, in completely different ways from Teddy and Jerry. "Bonehead" as he was nicknamed never had to be on a leash, and he was one fine hunting dog. Before we had kids, the neighborhood kids would all come over to play with him, he was a real joy and died too soon at age 8.

So I've been blessed to have a bunch of smart dogs and I wouldn't trade a minute with any of 'em. Heck, my dogs have been smarter than most people I know (present company excepted of course....) they'd NEVER vote for a Democrat.

Unfortunately, with the designer dogs you can’t always tell if they will shed or not. You may have more hair, but I have a newly clipped poodle who is freezing his a— off!!!

Many years back I had a mutt that got into hershey kisses and pooped tin foil for a week....I have heard that chocolate can kill a dog, but not mugsie...

My lab pooped out kelly green stools I spotted one day. Had to take a sample and figured I'd have to go to the vet..Never saw kelly green poo before...but then she puked up a teal blue sock, so I figured out where the poo got its color...the stain from the sock never did come out of the carpet..

Don’t know if it is the Lab, or GSD, or luck (?) - my wife sometimes worries that he may actually BE a human reincarnated, although she doesn’t believe in reincarnation. But a guard dog who alerts and doesn’t attack is a dog you can trust with kids.

Sounds just like my "Jerry" was .... half Golden Lab/Retriever, half German Shepherd. Great with the kids, fantastic guard dog. Sometimes he didn't know whether he was a big lab (ie: lap dog) and wanted a bunch of attention, or if he should've been patrolling the house on duty. It was funny sometimes to watch the conflict in him. He'd come up to me for attention then suddenly realize "hey, I'm on duty!" and go back on watch.

Sounds to me like you got a good one, and they're worth their weight in gold. I'd take another like Jerry in a heartbeat .....
