Archerís 32-point buck may be record (MN)
StarTribune ^ | 10/21/09 | Dennis Anderson

Posted on 10/21/2009 8:49:39 PM PDT by ButThreeLeftsDo

Scott O'Konek shoots his bow 300 days a year, dreaming that someday in the woods somewhere in Minnesota a white-tailed buck of memorable proportions will stride beneath his tree stand.

For O'Konek, 29, dream and reality blurred last week at Camp Ripley when a 32-point buck -- bearing perhaps the largest non-typical rack ever taken by archery in Minnesota -- ambled toward him.

Forty-four yards from O'Konek's perch, the statuesque whitetail stood a moment, shaking snow from its back as leaden skies drizzled rain. This was about 9 a.m. during the first of two special Camp Ripley archery hunts.

if bowling is not a sport, how can sitting up in a stand and shooting down onto a feed trough be considered a sport.

For your list....

I have a picture from the Dad of the hunter that shows that he was able to spine this monster from 44 yards....

However, the picture is on the work computer.

If you’re interested, I’ll post the proof tomorrow.

Beautiful buck. And good shootin’ too, 44 yards with a bow.

I wonder what type bow this fellow used? A compound bow, a recurve, self bow? A great shot especially since the deer was starting to move away. Once in a lifetime deer.

sitting up in a stand and shooting down onto a feed trough be considered a sport.

No "baiting" allowed for deer during any season in Minnesota.

The ‘guy’ in the story is the son of my close personal friend’s brother’s work mate.

I know, you may think it a stretch, but I have the original picture (from the day that it happened) with the spine shot on the work computer that I will produce in the AM......

Cool! If you think of it please give me a ping when you do.

I don't think thats a stretch at all. It seems like whenever a story like this is reported, someone I know or someone they know; knows the hunter involved (or their brother).

There are a lot of hunters up here but we seem to live in a small world together come fall.

many people mistakenly believe that Da Turdy Point Buck is by the yoopers. In fact, it is the brainchild of a band from Amherst Junction, WI named the Bananas at Large. the big clue in the song would be the adoration for Vince Lombardi and the glory years...

Thank you for the correction, and that bit of important Cheesehead history. Being from Illinois, I really could not care less ;) ... And being from Montana for most all of my life, "Vince Lombardi adoration" is not a big clue of any kind :D

But I did take note, and will not apply said mis-attribution again.

My family have been bow hunting for 3 generations. Its not easy to hit anything with a bow....try it sometime...Wind drift can take you off target, and inch can mean a complete miss......a branch cracking sends the deer off running. Not easy. good on this hunter, venison fixed right is better than beef.......

In our younger years, Husband and I each used to shoot competitive bow. It was a blast.

I don’t think I could pull back for love or money these days, but he got a big old Tom turkey last season with his crossbow. That was some fine shootin’! :)

And this guy deserves all the accolades he’s getting...and then some. :)

That really is a buck of a lifetime! Certainly fires me up to get in a tree this afternoon in some miserable weather. Since he was hunting from an elevated position, isn’t it possible that the ‘high’ shot is the entrance wound and that the angle could have actually made this a vitals shot?

Iirc baid is illegal in MN. But even in states where bait is allowed it is next to impossible for anyone who isn’t well disciplined in stealth, scent control, patience, and nerve to shoot a wiley, wise, monster buck. The sport is in the many hours of practice and repetition that finally culminate in a trophy kill.

I don’t really care if anyone believes my favorite sport is a “sport”, I know for a fact no one who hasn’t put in the time to learn and the discipline to do it right will be a success.

Not sure which picture you are referring to, but there also seems to be an entrance(?) wound in the shot from the first picture at about the same elevation. I am curious what the actual elevation was at 44 yards.

Beautiful buck and a great shot none the less...

That sucks bigtime...get an out of state license. They got public land there? You could have made that shot, me, not so much, this year with as little practice as I have had. Didn't the article say he shot 300 days a year?...

Post that pic if you got it, bro...

Well, count me green with envy. That’s a dandy buck; a once in a lifetime monster. I’ve been chasing the deer for 29 seasons now...one of these days I may get my chance at one like that. Or not. :)

I took a nice doe Oct. 11 with my bow and have let many deer walk away before and since, including an 8-pointer with about a 14” spread. Been waiting for a big one like that to walk by, plus, I enjoy sitting out there sharing nature with the critters so I don’t want my season to end to soon. I could have filled both my tags by the second Saturday of the season, but what fun would that be?

I’ve put in a lot of time out there this season already, and the hunting hours are getting shorter each day, leaving me less time to hunt in the evenings. After this weekend, the first nice-sized deer that gives me a shot is going down to fill my second tag, be it a buck or a doe.
