The most pretentious science fiction - fantasy TV shows
November 2, 2009

Posted on 11/02/2009 3:09:41 PM PST by EveningStar

Here are my selections for the most pretentious science fiction - fantasy TV shows (RELAX - THE CYNICISM IS ALL IN FUN!):

5. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997 - 2003) - Pretty much a chick series.

4. V (original - including miniseries' - 1983 - 1985) - Nazi lizard people invade the earth.

3. Alien Nation (1989 - 1990) - A message series with one message - racism is evil. We get it. Next. (amazingly enough, this series spawned five made for TV movies, which were viewed by all 500 of its fans)

2. Beauty and the Beast (1987 - 1990) - Nauseatingly sappy

1. Babylon 5 (1993 - 1998) - Yeah, I know that "true science fiction fans" like this series because J. Michael Straczynski is a fan of literary SF - and named a Psi Cop "Alfred Bester." Big deal.

I never saw the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica, but from what I've read about it, it definitely would have made my list.

OK. Those are my picks. How about yours?

The best part about Smallville is that several times an episode two characters will look at each other for what seems to be minutes at the end of a scene. The camera cuts back and forth as each character goes through at least 3 emotions. Clark looks worried, cut to Chloe who is sad and worried, cut to confused looking Clark, cut back to Chloe who is now resolute, back to Clark who mirrors the resolute look then looks confused before going back to looking worried.

Battlefield Earth, Travolta's Scientology epic, was also horrendous

No kidding. That movie, along with Clan Of The Cave Bear rank as two of the worst movies ever. Both however, were based on very good books. Go figure.

Buffy was cute, though.

Some of the subplots (Angel, lesbian Willow) were annoying, but the show was very funny and that was its strong point.

A show like that might not look that good if you just watched it once in a while.

Try the boxed set and you might get hooked in spite of your reservations.

Add "The Postman" to that list.

Yeah. Ultimately, I found the holodeck and the stories revolving around it irksome. Having a resident counselor
on the bridge was also irritating. Don’t even get me started on Voyager.

Loved “Beauty and the Beast”. Ron Perlman is one of my favorites.
Also enjoyed “Earth2” with Clancy Brown (Mr. Crabs) also another fave. I really enjoyed Clancy getting the chance to play the hero for a change.

Tuvok: the most annoying Vulcan ever.

Brimstone, Dresden Files

I liked those too. They did the same to Journeyman and Threshold and the Sarah Conners Chronicles.

Hey, I knew I’d seen Barack Obama somewhere before 2004!

You have to admit that they were environmentally correct and therefore green though. I mean, what could be more convenient? You stake a slimebag, it disentigrates into nothingness. No muss, no fuss, no messy cleanup. If only life were that simple when dealing with slimebags.

Yeah it really bugged me that they never “finished” explaining anything.

I wish USA or one of the other cable channels had picked it up.

Not to mention the over-arching theme: The War Between the Love of Order and the Love of Strife.

Ah crap. I liked that one too. ;)

Of course I never read the book so that may have something to do with it.

The direct opposite of Lost in Space. Maureen Robinson would do the wash and the shirts would come out folded and in a fresh plastic bag. Must have driven a teenage Al Gore bananas.

Agreed. Sure wish they cold have done the full 5 season arc instead of the hurried finish due to impending cancellation. The fifth season was near horrible.

Dont forget Harry Kim and the Kimtones featuring Harry on the clarinet. That show was so hardcore.
