This is, in my opinion, a solid example of American values.

(flame suit on)

This family, inspired by their daughter, voluntarily gave up certain things they could (in fact!) live without, in order to give to those who (for whatever reason) have less.

They didn't (AFAIK) go to Congress to get a bill passed to force others to do it.

They just did it.

Yeah, they wrote or allowed to be written a book about it, full of self-congratulation and suggestions that others do likewise-- but it's still a privately done matter.

I could see a conservative family doing this (though they might be discriminating-- on the basis of worthy need-- in their choice of beneficiaries); indeed I know of one older couple who sold their large "empty nest" to a family in their church-- for much less than it was worth, but still enough to buy an "elder condo" for two.

It is only when people like this desire that others be forced by law to follow suit that I have a problem.

She pestered her parents about inequity, insisting that she wanted to do something.

I have a better idea, Hannah...why don't you move into your parents' bedroom, and offer YOUR room to the homeless? That way; you don't have to give up your fancy home, and you can take a more 'active' role in helping the homeless. It's a 'win-win'!

her younger brother, Joe, was (reassuringly) a red-blooded American boy to whom it wasn’t intuitively obvious that life would improve by moving into a smaller house and giving money to poor people.

Red-blooded American men are among the most generous folks one could ever hope to meet. The smarmy jackass that wrote this piece needs to open his eyes and ears, and shut his mouth.

You offer to buy them food instead of giving them cash.
Then get amazed when they say “no thanks”.

That is “the acid test”.
I lived in Los Angeles for 10 years, but only twice was I truly moved
by the appearance of some homeless people.
The made their request for “help” as I entered a 7-11.
When I exited, I had a few extra food items, which were warmly received.

It was probably dumb luck, but I did manage to connect with someone
who appeared to be truly hungry.
