Lesbian sgt. discharged after police tell military

Jene Newsome played by the rules as an Air Force sergeant: She never told anyone in the military she was a lesbian. The 28-year-old's honorable discharge under the "don't ask, don't tell" policy came only after police officers in Rapid City, S.D., saw an Iowa marriage certificate in her home and told the nearby Ellsworth Air Force Base.

Newsome and the American Civil Liberties Union filed a complaint against the western South Dakota police department, claiming the officers violated her privacy when they informed the military about her sexual orientation. The case also highlights concerns over the ability of third parties to "out" service members, especially as the Pentagon has started reviewing the 1993 "don't ask, don't tell" law.

"I played by 'don't ask, don't tell,'" Newsome told The Associated Press by telephone.

They were NOT in the home. They merely read the certificate from a window. Yea they could read the dykes marriage license thru the window. Right.
Now This has to be the stupidest thing i have ever heard of.

“Police officers, who said they spotted the marriage license on the kitchen table through a window of Newsome’s home, alerted the base police”

Actually, according to one study (repeated by Andrew Sullivan), McCain got the most lesbians voters for any Republican running for President.

Maybe Lesbians and African-american men do not get along.

I do feel sorry for her, and the police were dead wrong. She played by the rules and conducted herself honorably while in the service.

I agree!

The police and the Air Force were completely out of line on this one. I’m cheering the ACLU on.

Hmmm...

Does the military have a regulation
requiring enlisted / officers to declare
their marriage status / spouse.

It would seem to be a prudent rule
As spouses can be threatened and cause security risks

Just Askn’

I thought "Don't ask, don't tell" sounded like a good idea, but apparently in practice it means "Don't ask, and hope like hell that nobody rats you out."

If third-party outing is permitted, I wonder how many gay servicemen and servicewomen have been subjected to blackmail.

Let’s hear the other side of the story, too.

In their sob stories about downtrodden gays, the media rarely explains why the laws were put into place. They fail to inform us why putting men (or female-craving lesbians) in women’s barracks is not a good idea. And why putting women (or homosexuals) in men’s barracks is not a good thing, either.

Bottom line — don’t put homosexuals in the close quarters of the military. No matter how many sob stories you hear.

Would you prefer that openly gay people be allowed to destroy the morale and discipline of the barracks?

Absolutely not, I think it would be a terrible idea. That was why I supported "Don't ask, don't tell." I thought the idea was that if individual gays never raised the subject of their sexuality, neither would the military. Apparently that is not the way it works.

I guess if we just ignored all criminal activity it will just go away or never effect the rest of society. /s

Repealing DADT and reverting to “ask, and if the asnwer is wrong, out the door” is what is needed.
