Out of Control Pit Bull Shot and Killed by Police

LONG BEACH -- Police in Long Beach shot and killed a pit bull that attacked a man and his dog, and then a woman and her dog, before going after officers.
Police responded to a report of a dog fight in the 100 block of Ximeno Avenue about 11 p.m. Tuesday.
They found a man on the ground who had been bitten several times. He was holding his small dog that had also been attacked.
Officers determined a neighborhood pit bull was responsible.
They contacted the pit bull's owner and told him to put his dog on a leash and bring him outside so he could be turned over to Animal Control, said Nancy Pratt of the Long Beach Police Department.
The owner brought the pit bull out, but it was apparently on a loose collar and pulled away from the owner.
With police chasing him, the pit bull ran to a vehicle where a woman and her small dog were just getting out.
The dog charged them, then began jumping on the passenger side window as the woman tried to get back in the car with her dog.
Police tried to subdue the animal by hitting him several times with a baton, but the dog was unaffected, and then tried to attack the officers.
One officer fired his weapon, but the dog was not hit and fled.
Officers tracked the dog to a park near St. Joseph Avenue and Livingston Drive, where it again lunged at the officers.
Two officers fired their weapons, killing the animal.
Animal Control then took possession of the dog's body.
The man bitten by the dog was taken to a hospital where he was treated for his injuries. His dog wastaken to an animal hospital and is expected to recover.
