In the 1970s the NASA space program was greatly scaled back throwing many engineers out of work. My brother was one of them.
And...Yes, he did start (literally)washing dishes and cleaning up in a bakery. Within one year he learned to be a master baker and opened his own bakery. He ran that bakery, and supported his family, for five years and sold it for a nice profit. He then returned to engineering.
In his fifties, his company moved and he was again out of work. He became a government school teacher in one of the worst inner city government high schools in the nation. He earned a masters degree in teaching. He taught math and science.
I agree. 99 weeks is too much.
By the way, its spring and I wish someone who was unemployed would come by and offer to wash the windows of our house.
I'm tired of the constant "social engineering". There was a debate on a weekend business show about what gas prices needed to rise to in order to bring about the desired result of less consumption. If we need to curb consumption, appeal to me on an intellectual or moral level, do not force my compliance by increasing taxes. Only in a Marxist world would the debate even have happened without one outraged voice on the panel.
I would like to know why a two-income family with a paid-off $250k family feels the economy is hurting them? At 63 he should have no dependents? Is he supporting his daughter and grand-daughter in a better lifestyle?
For once...an email posting that is 100% true. Robert A. Hall did, in fact, write this....
Thank you for posting my piece, “I’m Tired.”
I used “I’m Tired” the way one would use “I’m tired of salad” or “I’m sick of salad.” It doesn’t mean physically tired or sick. I would have thought that was clear to native English speakers.
One post asked why I was supporting my step-daughter. She was on drugs, got pregnant, has never worked a 40-hour week at 34 years old. But if we don’t, the baby, now 9, lives in the gutter. So she has a hostage to use against us. She voted for Obama because he “was going to help little people like her,” but I notice she still comes to me with the hand out, not him.
Others ask why I don’t do something about all this. I do what I can with my writing, while still working more than full time. I also have pulmonary fibrosis, an eventually-fatal disease (it kills more Americans than breast cancer, but there are no pink ribbons, no postage stamps, no big races for the cure and only a fraction of the research dollars, so it’s little known)which limits my energy for more than work and my blog.
People who wish to comment on “I’m Tired” can find it on my blog: www.tartanmarine.blogspot.com under February of 09. If you liked it, you may also like the posts below, or my almost daily political digest. ~Bob Hall
