EVERETT, Wash. Water falling from the ceiling was the first tip-off that something was wrong with Dean Rappleye's roof. Then it got worse.
"First of all they had to cut a large chunk of the sheet rock out and then pull out all of the insulation because it was all wet," said Rappleye.
And then he got a look at the outside of the roof.
"It was probably four, five, six different shakes had been torn physically from the roof, exposing the inside of the attic, a pretty good-sized hole," he said.
The damage was all caused by a furry little critter a raccoon. Rappleye had seen one.
"It took a lot of yelling and stomping and all kinds of noise to get him finally to move off," he said.
It didn't move far.
Rappleye's next-door neighbor had damage too. He got a new roof, as did another neighbor two years ago.
"It's annoying at night when they're scattering above you and you can't sleep," said Rachel Schweitzer.
"They would leave in the spring with the babies and eventually when we put the new roof in they can't get in any more," said Darwin Schweitzer.
There's not much you can do. State law says you can't hunt or trap raccoons and each city has its own wildlife restrictions. Rappleye gets that homeowners and raccoons have to coexist.
"I'm a lover of nature but I've got to tell you they've changed my mind a little bit. I wouldn't be above throwing a shoe at them or something like that," he said.
State wildlife officials advise homeowners to keep garbage can lids tightly secured and remove pet food.
WA state (raccoon ) ping
Well I have now caught 86 of the ring tailed cats in my back yard, and I live in the middle of town.
Poison them and let them die a painful death.
Go Galvalume

WTF? Raccoons?
Sorry, buddy. They are homeless immigrants and they have the right to stay. And don’t you dare patch up that roof and deprive them of sunlight and fresh air! You kick them out and I am boycotting Everett.
F ya. I don’t want them at my place.
Shoot ... saute’ ... shut up. ‘Coon is not bad baked with sweet potatoes, cinnamon & brown sugar.
Is it still technically hunting if you just shoot them and drop them in the trash?
WA state passed (by initiative) an anti trapping law a few years ago. How nuts is government these days? It included lawn mole traps too.

“Killer Raccoons of Puget Sound” would have been an AWESOME Drive-In feature back in the day...
Old style antifreeze works - and, it is green!
;-)
In Dallas, we had to get a whole new roof (courtesy of a hail storm) to keep the critters out. They just kept ripping the wood shingles out - sounded like elephants in the attic! they ARE vermin!
“Rappleye gets that homeowners and raccoons have to coexist”.
...you get what you voted for “Rappleye” or whateverTF your name is. They’ll continue to damage your home and belongings you pansie ass faggity liberal and I’m glad! Why not adopt them and give them a room of their own!
Believe me, I know all about raccoons trying to live in my house.
Trap ‘em and take them over to state wildlife officials house if they want them so bad.
The dog keeps them (and ground hogs, deer, skunks, ‘possums, squirrels, chipmunks, ducks and geese) at bay.
We have an over abundance of feral cats in our neighborhood and a neighbor was humanely trapping them to take them to the shelter.
A raccoon happened to wander into one of her traps, so she called animal control. The officer told her it is illegal to trap raccoons. She said I wasn’t trapping raccoons. He said “well you have one in you trap! I could fine you for trapping raccoons.” She replied “I was trapping cats!” He said “it does NOT matter you trapped a raccoon and if you catch another one I will fine you.”
In exasperation she asked how he expected the raccoons to know that they were not allowed to enter her traps and could he recommend someone who knew raccoon language so that she could get signs printed to warn them away.
The officer was NOT amused.
Nationwide, not just in Washington, people need to use EXTREME CAUTION with raccoons.
Rabies is now epidemic in the raccoon population, and they show few symptoms, at least until they die.
Wuz the “officer” armed?
Raccoons are vile creatures. They haven’t a redeeming quality. A 12 or 20 with #2 buck is the weapon of choice.
If state law said you couldn't put a fire out if your house was on fire, would you stand there and watch it burn? No wonder the gov't believes they need to take care of everyone. People have become too stupid to think for themselves.
Kill a few of the big boars and they will find safer digs
i have been thru this more than once
we don’t need no stinking Badgers...........
Raccoons- a roofer’s best friend!
I should rent out my killer Pomeranian. We’ve had one raccoon in our backyard, and our Pom chased him off.
Is that a real picture?
shoot them, drown them, hit them with a brick. Coons are hateful and will chew threw a roof and end up in your kitchen...nasty as snot, carrier of rabies, drown their babies also...I HATE COONS. and that is the only critter I hate..if necessary, use a pitchfork.....
New York, a few months ago. Heard something on my roof making godawful noises. Later there was a cop in my yard looking for a reported rabid raccoon. It apparently went after a neighbor's kids in daytime.
Thanks for the laugh! I’m glad someone yanked that lard butt’s chain!
State laws say you can't speed either..........
Trap them then either shoot them, drown them or take them for a long 20 mile ride and let them go..........
Hi Daffy, they are nasty little basturds. GG
Yes. Not sure where though. [Merced could be NoCali]
Apparently the ‘coons know the bus schedule and the driver feeds them on his grave shift.
Excuse: the darn thing was in my garbage can and I just stuck the hose in there to clean it out....oops dead coon..
Its not too smart to call any government agency to take care of a problem you can handle yourself....:O)
Coons are smart, government agents are stupid..
You are a bad girl......:O)
