1 : the act or an instance of embezzling
2 : a failure to meet a promise or an expectation.

Etymology:
"The tea table shall be set forth every morning with its customary bill of fare, and without any manner of defalcation." No reference to embezzlement there! This line, from a 1712 issue of Spectator magazine, is an example of the earliest, and now archaic, sense of "defalcation," which is simply defined as "curtailment." "Defalcation" is ultimately from the Latin word "falx," meaning "sickle" (a tool for cutting), and it has been a part of English since the 1400s. It was used early on of monetary cutbacks (as in "a defalcation in their wages"), and by the 1600s it was used of most any sort of financial reversal (as in "a defalcation of public revenues"). Not till the mid-1800s, however, did "defalcation" refer to breaches of trust that cause a financial loss, or, specifically, to embezzlement.

Thank you for the tips. I had him in a crate that is mostly enclosed, like an airplane shipping crate. The collies have their own and that’s where they like to sleep or just get away for quiet time. He is so timid that I am reluctant to use any kind of loud stimulus with him. I have taken him out every time he starts barking but he only has the need for it about 1/3 of the time. He had zero accidents in the house yesterday which is huge. He has chewed through most of his new harness in one spot so I’ve tightened it up. The dog he has bonded with here is getting a little weary of him but hasn’t barked or snapped at him. Oliver will sleep laying right next to Chumley and Chum will let out a big sigh.
The key is to make sure you do not reinforce the barking by taking him out (giving him what he wants) when he barks. While you want him to let you know when he needs to go out, you don’t want him to think that if he barks he gets to go out. When you take him outside, and he does his toilet business, you should positively reinforce the “potty” experience with excitement and “Good Boy!” and high praise for successfully pottying outside.
I’ve got that part down. But, like dealing with a crying baby, the first thing you have to do is eliminate the obvious source of the problem.

But, he never barks, he learns quickly, he never whines. Now that his allergies have been treated and are under control, he is simly perfect. He did chase a turkey away this morning, but I can forgive that. He's just a love.

I was a little worried about the turkey. It was up in the air before I realized what he was doing. I think it may have been a hen that he scared off her nest. I hope she comes back. It’s hard to tell a hunting dog not to hunt.
Wild turkeys are clever. She should be moving her chicks when the coast is clear. My dogs live to chase squirrels. They ignore all the other wildlife.

Our current foster dog, Nemo, is a prize. He picked up the potty training extremely quickly and is very good about asking out. He freely and willingly goes into the crate at night when we tell him to crate, and he doesn’t bark at all until he wakes up at about 6:00 am and needs to go outside to pee. He barks a couple of times to let us know he needs to go out and then waits for us to come get him. His only behavioral “fault” is that he wants to chew on every sock, shoe, towel, or pillow that he finds, so we have to redirect him to the right toys, but even that is pretty easy. He will be having surgery in a couple of weeks to have the bad front leg removed. I am confident that once he gets used to being free of the pain that he has in that leg and gets proficient at navigating around on three legs, he is going to be extremely playful and fun (he already is, but he will be moreso when he doesn’t have to deal with his deficient leg) and will be adopted very quickly.
OMG. Squirrels are Robbie's and Lilah's delight. They chase them and bark at them. But they also love to chase gheckos, and Robbie likes to chase snakes too.
Robbie would have had a field day at our house this past year. We’ve lived here over 15 years and had only seen one green grass snake until this last year, when we had the 3.5- 4 ft. long king snake, 4.5 ft gray rat snake, and the little 18-22 inch banded king snake. The last one was found swimming in the pool. I’d like to go another 15 years without seeing any more!
